    The new introduce yourself thread.......

Post by Admin on Tue 15 Dec 2009, 11:30 am

    Hi there folks....

As I go around the internet writing to this forum and that I notice that every forum has an introduction thread for new members or for people who want to join and feel the need to let us know a bit about them.

Up until now the ROB2 set of forums did not have a thread specifically for this purpose.

Now anybody who feels the need can write to this thread here and tell us about themselves or ask any question about life on Ripped-Off Britain.

    Over to you......

    Hi there

This is Rider, and not to be confused with any other members LOL

I am active on many consumer forums, particularly ones dealing with bank charges and debt collection agencies, helping consumers to fight for justice. I am a Moderator on two forums, but made contact with ROB through British Consumer.

Pleased to see hello and perhaps to advise on developments in my areas of involvement.

Hi there "Rider" and welcome to ROB2 !

Many will have already noticed that we already have a "Riders_On_The_Storm" ( plural ), here in the presence of our Andrew and we should not confuse the two.

I Spotted Rider on another forum I frequent and thought it might be fun to have two similar persona's on ROB2. I invited him to come and visit ROB2 by personal message and I am delighted that he took up the invitation.

I am sure we will have fun finding out the differences between "Rider" and our Andrew as they write their own personalities into the Ripped-Off Britain forums.

NOW...as "Rider" already has some expertise in banking matters and debt-collection agencies etc' I am sure that he will become a welcome and helpful member of this "rip-off" type of web-presence here.

As usual, any of you that are in need of his specialist advice can either ask it in the body of the sub-forums or if required, by PM.

I hope that your stay with us here on ROB2 is a happy and fulfilling one Rider.

Heloooooo Rider. Nice to meet you. Nice bod' as well BTW Smile

Our illustrious leader is playing games with you and Andrew but I don't think there is any intended mischief in his actions.

I am sure that you and Andrew are completely different characters as we will find out as soon as Andrew spots your presence here.

I hope that you can advise about banking needs too as very few of us these days get our banking done without mishap at some time.

Anyway, I also hope that you like it here and that you come back regularly to give us your wisdom and your opinions on the wide-ranging subjects that come up on the forums here.

Hi All I have arrived from pensioners forum where every one knows all about me but I know little about any member on either forum. The only interest any one seems to have is the forum or the only interest they are willing share. This a different forum so I will tell how a 70 year old enjoys his life. Most mornings at least 5 times a week I go to DW Sports GYM in Mansfield to exercise and socialise with like minded people. The afternoon weather permitting I potter round in the garden trying to get ready for the growing season to begin. If not check out four different forums which I am a member, Divernet. Yourkshire Divers being the other two.
Scuba Diving a sport I was introduced to at the age of 66 I really got hooked, and really enjoy it. If you haven't tried it give it a bash. My next diving trip is to South Africa for three weeks in May where I hope dive with many different types of sharks. If you think this is dangerous its not, they are very shy beautiful animals and we are just not on their menu sheet. Hugh

Hi there Hugh....( Shuggy ) Smile

It is nice to hear a bit more about you even if I for one feel I know you already.

Like you I have always been a keen swimmer and high diver but I have never yet had the chance to try sub-aqua diving. I HAVE done a lot of snorkelling while on foreign holidays but have found that, ( being a miserable Scot and a bit tight-fisted - as we are inclined to be Rolling Eyes ), that the charges for "Scuba" diving abroad are far too high for me.

Since I burst an eardrum diving deeply into a natural pool while on holiday in The Algarve and have permanent damage, ( tinnitus ), I doubt whether I will ever try sub-aqua diving now at nearly 66 years of age.

Now running my forums and surfing the 'net take up a lot of my time even although, like you, I too, enjoy gardening and hill walking.

Hope you find a lot of stuff that might interest you here and that you get stuck into some of the good discussions we have here on a myriad of subjects - not just consumerism.

Well Paul I was 66 when I started scuba diving and I was a very poor swimmer, around 20 yards is about all I could do, at the time I passed my Open Water Course. It was a wake up call for me to get fit. This morning in the pool I did 800 metres at a nice slow pace. Its a sport any one can do even a wheel chair bound person. They use fin type gloves rather than fins on their feet. As you say its not cheap, but I may as well enjoy myself rather than have it taken off me in care fees at a later date.
I also have tinnitus, but I have now got use to it and doesn't bother me, although it makes people think I can't hear very well.
Should any one be interested in learning to dive, Atlantic divers south Tenerife is a very good school, and the waters always nice warm and clear, and I have done over 100 dives with them and enjoyed every one, and will be back with them later this year. Hugh

Hi Shuggy. Welcome aboard the good ship ROB. Cool

I have done a bit of scuba-diving and find it as close as one can get to flying.

I have not done any abroad as I usually do it in cold British waters with a dry/wet-suit on.

I have also made a bit of good money on short contracts to oil-companies.

Paps, you should try it as it is amazing.

All you will need to do is to shoo away all of those moths from your wallet. pirat lol!

Hi Zathrus If I lived near the south coast or any good dive site I would invest in a dry suit. Living in Mansfield area you can't get much further from the coast so its just not worth the investment. You can get some very good deals in Tenerife where the divings very good. None of the maddening crowds found in the Red Sea. In Tenerife waters you see many different types of Rays, Large groupers, angel sharks to mention a few. Sharks are the only thing missing so I am off to South Africa to swim with them or drift with them because it's a strong current. Drift dives are great cover a lot of ground with no effort. cheers cheers

    Hello Everyone,

I live in the north of England, and I have recently retired from a life in academia. (38 years in the university sector) I am fortunate that I am one of the lucky ones who has been able to do this WITHOUT seeing all my pension decimated or all my students life ( as yet ) being ruined by accumulating DEBT

This is a most interesting site with some good input. I am surprised that it is not visited by more people; as most of the comments seem to come from only a few people..What a shame !. While you deal with 'rip off Britain' I may have a few observations which underpin the state of this rip off within the UK. Of course this is my opinion, but I can assure the group that all the facts are out there for anyone wishing to do the research. I hope to publish a number of comments regarding the state of the 'nation' and our possible future direction....I do this out of concern for what is happening and what we are facing. I would welcome all comments and views, and hope this will make a valid contribution.

    Kind regards to you all

Hi "Technician" and welcome to R.O.B. !

Yes, this website is a comparatively new one as I was forced to build it from scratch when the forums of the original "Rip-Off Britain" website were closed down. ( I was the editor of those forums for many years ).

Because I was unable to use the term "Rip-Off Britain" for my website address due to copyright laws, ( curiously, unlike the new Rip-Off Britain BBC-TV programe of that name ), I was foced to call it Ripped-Off Britain.

As consumerism is not really a very sexy subject this site does not attract as many people as I hoped it would, but it is slowly going from strength to strength.

I - and the rest of the activists and "lurkers" - who read but do not feel able to write to the forums - would love to hear your opinions on the subjects that you hold close to your heart.

Hi All since I posted last I have had two trips to South Africa and had some amazing dives with sharks, tigers, bull, blacktipped, duskies, sandtigers and sand sharks. The first dive with them was a real shock to the system, a bull shark, must have sensed my fear and came within inches of my face before turning. Other divers were pointing at me so I turned to see a 5 metre long tiger up close to my rear, a realy beutiful sight. After that first dive I just enjoyed seeing and being with them. They realy are friendly beautiful animals which have an unfounded bad reputation.

VERY brave Shuggy ! "A bull shark and a Tiger shark" eh ?

I must admit that I love sharks as they seem to have the most water-dynamic bodies of any fish or even mammal that swims - including dolphins and Orca. They are super-sleek and super-fast and really quite dangerous and that is why I like to watch them at my local Deep-Sea-World aquarium in North Queensferry - through glass ! Twisted Evil

    Find it HERE.

Anyway, glad that you have visited again, now let us hear what "floats your boat" as far as life-interests are concerned.

    Hello Shuggy, and welcome back.

I am sure that you will find more to talk about and a wider view of life here that you might anywhere else. At least I do !

I too love swimming and I often take my class on swimming trips in our home town and find that the kids love it too.

One thing has upset me recently though: Because of the swingeing government cuts to the local authorities we are seeing many social meeting places being closed down here including two of our best swimming pools.

Where will it all end I wonder ?

After all, most governments want our kids to learn to swim and to maybe become great olympic athletes and swimmers but they seem unable or unwilling to spend the money that they should be spending to ensure that the up and coming athletes and swimmers are taken from our schools. Even the cash-strapped Russians and many other poor countries can find enough money to finance such important susbjects.

Not us it seems ! Evil or Very Mad

Nothing brave about diving with sharks they are very friendly beautiful animal and under water nothing to fear. You could say I was brave on my first dive with them. Now I just love them and enjoy their company. Back in with them again 2013 money and health permitting. At the age of 73 you never know.

Thankyou Angie, Cameron and his mates are certainly doing alot of damage with these cut backs. Cutting back on childrens sports funding is wicked General strike on its way I fear.
Sports wise I enjoy the GYM and about to give golf a try having my first lesson on Monday.

Hi there "biglin", ( Linda ), great to meet you !

As this is only an introduction thread it would be great if you could use your membership to get over onto the Politics sub-forum and give us your much-valued opinions over there.

I have to admit that the management here and some of the members are quite "lefty" in their approach to politics but that aside we do welcome people of other political persuasions to come and give us their views on political matters.

There is nothing better on such forums than to find people having a good and heated argument about politics so long as that argument does not start to get personal or abusive.

Welcome aboard the good ship ROB, ( Ripped-Off Britain ), geddit ? Very Happy and I hope that your stay here is both fulfilling and pleasant.

Hello Adele. and welcome to Ripped-Off Britain, also known as "ROB" here.

I am sure that you will find something to hang your hat on in the pages of ROB if you have a wee explore and look through all of our sub-forums.

As a lefty, you will be particular welcome here as although we also welcome contributors from all walks of life and from many different countries here, this site does lean a bit to the left too.

within my Job I fight for the customer, and to make sure that the customer gets the best deal available. I actually love my job, which makes me a rare breed for my generation. I love Everton football club, and I think that Jimmi Hendrix is the greatest musician to grace this planet.

Hi there Bowsie.....( I think we have agreed to call you that in a friendly way ).

I am so sorry that you have not had your "get-to-know-you" entry responded to before this as very little of what goes on in ROB actually happens in this sub-forum.

Now that I have finally got around to this response I have to officially welcome you to ROB and hope that you find lots of topics to discuss while you grace our hallowed halls.

The busiest sub-forum here is now the Political forum and it will be good to have someone like yourself taking the centre-line as most of the others who write are leaning over to the right or left in their opinions.
