Who would be a graduate these days ?

Post by Angie baby on Sat 01 Aug 2009, 11:33 am

I am OK as I have a job that is fairly secure but how awful it must be to be a university graduate with a massive debt bill to pay and no chance of a job in sight.

It seems that a large percentage of new graduates from universities and colleges are waiting for many months and even years in some cases to find a job that equates to their qualifications. What is worse is the fact that many companies or even MPs are now giving long term internships at low pay or no pay while taking advantage of these post-graduates.

See this report from The Guardian newspaper:

The idea that student loans would not have to be repaid until AFTER the student had qualified and attained a decent job was a good idea but if the graduate student cannot get a paid job that debt is going to be hanging over her/his head for some time.

Not an enviable position to be in ?

I know only too well about the debt. I do not mind paying off what I have borrowed but what I am paying now does not even seem to be servicing the interest on the debt.

Interest - A charge for repaying money that never even existed in the first place.

It is encouraging that you can find humour in that situation as a debt to ANYBODY is a lead weight round their neck that gets heavier and heavier the longer it stays unpaid.

I just LOVE your description of "Interest" ! Twisted Evil

Another description is "usury" and that fits very well too as anybody that has a loan with heavy interest is certainly getting a "using" - to use a Scottish saying !
