Councils ‘ripped off’ by private landlords, experts warn.

New figures reveal English councils spend almost £1bn a year on temporary housing

Desperate councils are being “ripped off” as private housing providers take advantage of the growing homeless population, experts have warned, after new figures revealed that local authorities’ spending on temporary accommodation had soared to almost £1bn.

Analysis by the Guardian and the housing charity Shelter found that councils across England spent £997m on temporary accommodation in 2017-18, a 71% increase on the £584m in 2012-13.

Some councils are spending as much as £200 per head of their population on sheltering homeless households.

Housing policy experts said that the sharp rise in homelessness coupled with increasing charges from private providers were behind the increase.

I don't think many people will be surprised at this but most of might think that although it is easy to rip-off new tenants in the private sector, the local authorities might know better.

There needs to be legislation coming from government to ensure that private housing should NEVER be a rip-off and if the private sector landlords do not comply then they should simply be struck off the council books.

I remember the days of "council housing" where the property was owned by the council and rented out.

Before the terrible rush to privatise social housing, these homes were amongst the best standard homes in Britain.

Now the real privateers have taken over and the quality of these houses has dropped markedly and the private landlords are putting large families into one and two bedroom homes.

It's a racket, and I hope somebody in the next government fixes it.

Yes, it certainly is a "racket" Zathrus.

Of course, while the Tories are in charge the private sector can do no wrong.

Got to agree with you Angie, as the Tories are connected to the private sector by their backsides.

Never mind, we may see a change of government now that the two biggies are falling apart.
