Red Arrows RAF Scampton air base to be sold off.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 24 Jul 2018, 11:59 am

The home of the Red Arrows air display team is to be sold off, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.

RAF Scampton, which was also home to 617 Squadron as they prepared for the Dambusters mission in World War Two, has housed the Red Arrows since 2000.

Six hundred people currently work at the site near Lincoln.

The MoD, which wants to save 3bn by 2040, is also closing RAF Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire where 300 people work.

I honestly cannot see how selling off this base is going to save money, as the Red Arrows have to be based somewhere.

It will probably cost more to re-house this flagship squadron than they have saved selling off Scampton.

What do you good folks think if this ?

I feel this will be a costly mistake. Closing the Dam Busters Historical base is likely to raise and uproar. It really needs preserving.

Scampton not only has a long and celebrated history, but it is away from centres of population, which is needed for the complex aerobatics practicing of the Red Arrows, without causing too much noise pollution.

Also, Scampton has one of the longest runways on MOD bases; which may well be needed for heavy Cargo Transports in the case of future conflict. It is also relatively central.

I feel that the MOD is looking solely at the bottom line, and not considering other factors. Yes the place needs remedial work, but it should be kept up to scratch even as a museum.

And how many times have we seen the "bottom" line being used for many acts of vandalism done by the government.

I totally agree that there are more reasons for keeping RAF Scampton open than there are for selling it off.

They will rue the day that they did this.

That is a ridiculous and irrational act.

They, the Red Arrows, are going to have to be housed somewhere at an airfield that has a similar runway.

Not only the runway; they will need a base which is remote, as Scampton is. Too near any large areas of population and there are likely to be accidents, as well as complaints of the noise, because the Red Arrows are constantly training, both to train new pilots and also to keep the fine performance edge they have. Pilots only spend about 18 months in the display team on average, before rotating back to normal duties.

I honestly cannot see what they have gained by selling off Scampton, as it was eminently suitable for all of the reasons you mentioned HG.

Over three thousand people have already signed the petition to save Scampton.

If you would like to sign the petition too HERE is where you need to go to do it.
