Sir Cliff Richard: Singer wins BBC privacy case at High Court.

Post by papa_umau on Wed 18 Jul 2018, 11:15 am

Sir Cliff Richard has won his privacy case against the BBC over its coverage of a police raid on his home.

High Court judge Mr Justice Mann awarded an initial 210,000 in damages.

The singer claimed the BBC's reporting of the 2014 raid, which was part of an investigation into historical child sex allegations, was a "serious invasion" of privacy. He was never arrested or charged.

The BBC said journalists acted in good faith and it is considering an appeal.

Speaking outside the High Court in London, the BBC's director of news and current affairs Fran Unsworth apologised to Sir Cliff and said: "In retrospect, there are things we would have done differently."

But, she said, the case marked a "significant shift" against press freedom and an "important principle" around the public's right to know was at stake.

I thought that this was over and done with a while ago, but seems not.

I don't know about you guys, but I have always thought that people should never be tried in the court of the media. That is what the real courts are for.

The main rule for British justice is "innocent until proven guilty" and these decisions should never be made by allegations in the media.

Guilty or innocent I am pleased that Sir Cliff took the BBC to court and won. The payment awarded was just not big enough.

And another thing; the money should not come out of the taxpayers pockets, it should come out of the pockets of the CEOs that allowed that infringement of civil liberties.

The BBC are going to appeal this decision and will pay for the appeal with the taxpayers money.

Good, innit ? Evil or Very Mad

    It is absolutely ridiculous.

Let the BBC bosses that were indicted pay for their appeal out of their own pockets.

I totally agree with that idea Angie.

If the bosses at the BBC did infringe on Sir Cliff's privacy it is they that should finance any appeals.

Apparently, the Newspaper which called the Beeb in has also been whacked with a hefty fine. I applaud the crackdown on the Press; it has gone far beyond its guidelines, and I'm angry that Leveson 2 has apparently been scrapped.

I can't say that I'm much of a fan of Sir Cliff, since he went 'Holy Joe', but I liked his early records.

I suppose his music had little to do with his general lifestyle but he has been a target for the media since he appeared to be gay. Nothing has been proven about this.

True; and apparently the Beeb are going to appeal.

I believe that their appeal was refused yesterday.
