Bay City Roller Alan Longmuir dies.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 02 Jul 2018, 11:51 am

Alan Longmuir, a founding member of the Bay City Rollers, has died.

The Edinburgh-born musician was surrounded by his family when he died at Forth Valley Hospital in Larbert at 06:00, following a short illness.

Mr Longmuir formed the Bay City Rollers with his brother, Derek, and went on to find huge chart success in the 1970s.

Paying tribute to the 70-year-old, his family said he would humbly describe himself as "just a plumber from Edinburgh who got lucky".

Frontman Les McKeown, described his friend as "the original Bay City Roller".

And bandmate Stuart Wood said he would "remember the good times we had for over 40 years".

During my formative years the Bay City Rollers were one of my favourite Scottish bands, but as we all grow old our music heroes grow old with us and we must learn to expect that these types of news will now appear regularly.

The only band that does not seem to suffer from getting old is the wonderful Rolling Stones who can still easily fill stadium concerts.

Yes, this is sad news as like a few more here I remember the Bay City Rollers as if it was just yesterday.

I suppose that living that life is a dangerous way to do it.

I must agree though that The Stones seem to be exempt from such age-related problems.

Many popular bands only hope to get a few years in the business and often they break apart or lose one influential band member, which take some of the "magic" out or what they do.

The greatest example of this was with Queen when Freddie died. They have never been the same since.

Of course the Bay City Rollers collapsed in the normal way once their style of music no longer appealed to the fans.

Pop music comes and goes, but rock music lives on forever.
