Train RIP-OFF: UK rail fares are the costliest in Europe

RAIL passengers who regularly face the misery of late, overcrowded trains are also paying far more than their European counterparts.

For a little more than the price of an annual season ticket from Liverpool to Manchester you can buy a ticket that lets you travel across the entire German network for a year.

UK passengers pay on average 50p per mile travelled compared to as little as 21p per mile in Spain and 15p per mile in Italy.

Britons are paying over the odds even when allowing for differences in national salaries, the study by personal finance experts Credit Angel revealed.

The monthly cost of a season ticket as a percentage of average monthly wages ranges from as little as 2.4 per cent for a 68-mile round trip in France to 14 per cent for a 70-mile return journey in England.

I posted this because we do not often get the chance of comparing "like-for-like" when we look at the cost of rail fares in Britain and in countries across Europe.

To be able to see this comparison gives us a base to really find out how much we are ripped off when travelling by train in the UK.

I have known for a while that the British rail-fares are the most expensive in Europe, but what comes as a shock is that they are not dependable or even fast.

France, Germany, and Italy, not to mention Japan, can blow them away for delivering great services to their people.

You are dead right there Zathrus. Investing in modernising the trains and the tracks has just gone to hell in the hands of the TOCS.

Just looking tells us that many of the great railways of the world are owned and run by and for the people.

Wherever the profit motive raises its ugly head services always suffer.

I am sure that the powers that be already know this, but they will just not admit it to themselves or us.

    What are "TOCS" Papa ?

Anyway, I think that many of the travelling Brits would like to see all of our railway services nationalised.

Once this was done we could then copy how the successful public railways in France and Germany do it.

Hi Angie. Sorry that I did not explain that acronym at the time. I usually do.

The term TOCS simply stands for Train Operating Companies.

And yes, I think after years of privatised franchises ALL of the rail services need to be renationalised.

I say that when the profit motive is the main driver for service, the actual services always suffer.

We have plenty of great public rail services across the world to learn from.

The continental rail companies own the British Companies, and use the profits from the high ticket prices to subsidise their own already low fares. We need to renationalise our infastructure.

It isn't only Rail; but buses, electricity, Gas, Phones, Water and many more. Foreign companies are bleeding us dry.

Both the East Coast and the West coast lines are now owned by Network Rail which is a state owned company. There are many more lines like Crossrail and the tubes that are still privatised.

AND YES, I agree HG that all of the railways and the buses and the other national services SHOULD be re-nationalised.

I have always said that where the profit motive is applied to services the service ALWAYS suffers.

South Western trains look like they might come back to Public ownership soon; there are still many strikes planned about the removal of guards. They are the main company through from Waterloo. They are trying to renegotiate certain terms.

And of course the unions want the rail companies to be re-nationalised too.

If the labour party get back in they are promising to re-nationalise all of the rail companies.
