The latest design for a Hypersonic passenger aircraft.

Post by papa_umau on Sat 30 Jun 2018, 12:28 pm

Boeing unveils design for hypersonic passenger plane.

This is not Concord, The SST is planned to fly at mach 5 and will cross the Atlantic in two hours.

The thing is: Will be too expensive for the ordinary person to fly in

    See it in YouTube:

You do love this kind of stuff don't you Papa.

I am sure that because of the failure of Concorde this proposed aircraft is going to have to be fully tested so that it does not suffer from the mistakes of the past.

It sounds really frightening to think about flying at mach five as that - I think - is five times the speed of sound.

Had a wee look at Wikipedia and found that mach five IS five times the speed of sound, and that is five times 1234kph, or 6170kph

It can only do this as it will fly at a much higher altitude than supersonic flight where the air is thin and flying will be much smoother and with less turbulence.

And yes Papa, I like this stuff too. sunny ( And it does help to know this stuff when my students ask awkward questions ).

I had an idea that you might have been interested in such things Angie.

Especially when you have to teach this stuff where you work.

    Quite correct Papa.

I often have to have answers for many subjects that I don't have a personal interest in.

There is one question I have to ask about that sleek-looking aircraft: How does it land if the pilot is unable to see the ground ?

That problem was fixed on the Concorde design by making the nose able to turn down so that the pilots could see what was going on in front of the aircraft at landing times.

    Excellent question Angie.

Maybe a similar answer for a pilot's view on landing will be found for the hypersonic jet.

The completed development design of this plane is far away into the future.

I'm not sure Concorde 'Failed' as such; it was just getting to the end of it's useful life It actually had far fewer accidents than many of it's contemporaries, 707's were quite notorious, the Comet was a victim of poor design, and even Jumbo Jets have had far more accidents than Concorde.

The Russian Tupolev 'Concordski' was a disaster though. I think the fact that the Russian plane crashed at the Paris Air Show tainted the 'real' Concorde, and the Air France one actually crashed; but ours was withdrawn over a relatively trivial incident involving a tyre.

The main problem with Concorde was that because the fuel tanks filled the very thin wing spaces it was at high risk of exploding in the air.

This is what happened to the last Concorde to fly before they were banned.

Another problem was that they did not generate enough passenger cash to keep them going as they were just too expensive for the ordinary people to use.

The proposed hyperjets could suffer from the same problem.

True; They were always the 'Ultra First Class'.

Extremely complex aviatronics too; My uncle used to wire up their Flight Simulators.

Yes, they were true fly-by-wire, meaning that there were no mechanical connections from the cockpit to the control surfaces. They were all electrical.

This means that there had to be a bank of control computers, ( sometimes three or more ), that could automatically work if the original ones failed.

Something else that will have to be in the proposed hypersonic passenger jet.
