Grenfell Tower: 'Stay put' advice failed, says expert.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 04 Jun 2018, 12:13 pm

Advice to "stay put" during the Grenfell Tower fire had "effectively failed" within around half an hour of the blaze starting, a report has found.

Dr Barbara Lane said there was "an early need for total evacuation of Grenfell Tower", but she added it was not an "easy decision to make".

Her comments are in one of five reports published at the start of the fact-finding stage of the public inquiry.

Seventy-two people died as a result of the blaze, the inquiry has said.

This includes Maria Del Pilar Burton, 74, who died in January. She had been in hospital since she was rescued from the 19th floor.

The inquiry is expected to last around 18 months.

I had always thought that it was a mad thing to encourage people to stay in their flats when the blaze was spreading so fast up the outside of the building.

Maybe this would be correct guidance if the firefighters could have been able to put the fire out BEFORE it reached into every flat; but this was not the case at Grenfell.

I have tried to imagine what it must have been like to be inside all of these flats while the fire spread up the building so fast and these poor people would eventually come to realise that they were going to die in the most horrible way possible.

I shudder even thinking about it ! Sad

I wondered about that wrong advice at the time and since we have been told that the cladding was not up to fire code and the fire-doors were nothing of the kind I think that advising the people to stay in was a mistake close to mass murder.

Also, there was no fire alarm, no sprinklers, and only one staircase for safe egress.

All of these questions are going to have to be dealt with in this enquiry.

I have never heard a more disgusting set of reports about Grenfell tower.

The people who were responsible for building and upgrading this death-trap should pay for it with jail-time and a massive fine.

Got to agree with you there Angie.

There were more Anti-fire-safety faults in and on that block than I have seen or read about anywhere else.

Heads should roll and jail sentences should be applied to the people responsible for those faults.
