NI abortion law: Reform 'a feminist test for May'.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 29 May 2018, 11:49 am

Labour has challenged Theresa May to show she really is a feminist by backing reform of Northern Ireland's strict abortion law.

Shadow Attorney General Shami Chakrabarti said women in Northern Ireland "have been let down by privileged women and men for too long".

She said the PM was a "self-identifying feminist" and "the test of feminists is whether they stick up for all women".

Following Ireland's historic vote on abortion, the PM has been urged to liberalise NI law.

MPs from all parties - including within Mrs May's own cabinet - have already called on her to support a change in Northern Ireland, which is more restrictive than the rest of the UK.

Read on about this difficult subject from The BBC News HERE

If the power-sharing agreement was still in force in Northern Ireland we could expect Stormont to follow the historic vote in the South. As a home parliament is still not available to the Northern Irish people maybe this change in the NI statutes should be made in Westminster ?

    Anybody ?

Maybe it should, but Theresa May is not going to upset Arlene Foster and the DUP by making a new abortion law for Northern Ireland in Westminster that will kill off her working majority.

Very true, and I have said as much in other threads here.

I can tell you all that I would not be in Theresa May's shoes at this time as she is getting it from all sides just now. While she is trying to get a deal for us to get out of the EU, she is being stabbed in the back by Arlene Foster so that she can get her own way too.

With friends like Foster she needs no enemies.

Yes, eventually, this back-room deal with the DUP is eventually going to finish off the Westminster Tories.

    At least I hope so.
