Rolls Royce forced to cut staff travel.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 14 May 2018, 11:16 am

Rolls-Royce is forced to ban all but essential staff travel as it faces huge bill to fix faults in its airplane engines

Rolls-Royce engine costs expected to hit 300m in 2018.

Rolls-Royce is expected to reveal that the total cost for fixing the problematic Trent 1000 engine on Boeings 787 Dreamliner will come to more than 300m in the next year, when it reports annual results on Wednesday.

However, analysts do not believe the problems will deflect the UKs aero-engine maker from its target for 1bn free cash flow by 2020.

The market is expecting Rolls-Royce to take a further hit on the troublesome engine programme when it reports on Wednesday, after taking charges of more than 30m in the first half.

However analysts also expect the group to clarify further costs for 2018 and into 2019 as the repair programme continues.

I was very surprised to hear that Rolls Royce, ( probably the best aero-engine makers in the world ), were having lengthy and severe problems with their new Trent engine.

This does not make air-travel any easier when we know that we depend on these engines being dependable too.

Are you folks worried about this ?

The aero engine division has had problems before; I recall there was a bit of trouble with the Olympus, which Concorde used.

Perhaps they should go back to naming their engines after birds of prey, such as the Merlin and the Griffin.

I guess some would say: "what's in a name" HG.

I have no clue why such an experienced jet engine manufacturer cannot fully test a new engine BEFORE it goes into service.

Of course, you are right that they have had teething troubles with some of their previous engines, but I think that Rolls Royce aero-engines are still the best in the world, as aircraft manufacturers from all over the world still like to buy these engines for their new aircraft.

Even a few American plane-makers use Rolls Royce aero engines instead of the home-grown and Canadian Pratt and Whitney ones.

Yes, Boeing use the Trent in the Dreamliner.

Correct HG, that Boeing have Rolls Royce engines in a few of their aircraft.

HERE is a site that explores this new aircraft.

The question I need to ask is: If they are having so much trouble with their Trent engine, why are they already in service in The Dreamliner ?

Yes Zathrus, I already asked that question.

I think that in lots of other mechanical products, as well as aero-engines the proper testing is done in service.

That is a scary bit of knowledge if I is true.

I would think that all engines placed in planes going into service would be totally safe.

If not then that makes flying even more frightening than it already is.

I think that what they practice is: "If you don't know about it, it cannot hurt you"

The trouble is that so many people are now on the internet that it will be hard NOT to know what is going on here.
