Scotland calls time on the cost of booze.

Scotland ends cheap booze as minimum price starts

The price of cheap, high-strength alcohol has gone up in Scotland as long-awaited legislation on minimum pricing comes into force.

The law, which sets a floor price for drinks depending on how many units of alcohol they contain, was passed in 2012 but has faced legal challenges.

The Scottish government said the move would cut consumption and save lives.

High-strength white cider and cheap own-brand vodka and whisky will see the biggest rise in prices.

Ministers said the idea was to target booze that attracted problem drinkers.

They were concerned that a two-litre bottle of strong cider (7.5 abv), which contained more than the weekly recommended limit for alcohol (14 units), could be bought for as little as 2.50.

It will now cost at least 7.50.

There are two thoughts on this action:

1 ) That people who want cheap booze will still get it even if they have to steal it.

    And....

    2) People who do not abuse alcohol, like social drinkers and the ones that take an occasional drink at home will be hit just as hard as the people who do abuse drink.

Read more on this from The BBC News HERE

Well folks, how do you respond to this action, and do you think that this is just more of the nanny state or is it simple another way that the inland revenue can get more out of your pocket ?

I used to buy Aldi's triple distilled Tamova vodka as it was as good as any of the expensive ones, but I was shocked to hear that a litre bottle of this fine vodka has gone up by four pounds from 14 to 18, according to a Scots pal.

I wonder if England is going to have it's unit price put up too.

    I hope not.

I am sure that England and Wales will follow Scotland by putting up their unit price for alcohol too.

As this is the first time any country has done this, and it turns out to be successful, I am sure that, as usual, the rest of the country will follow Scotland's lead.

Personally, I feel that if the people want cheap booze, they will find it.

Also, many people will pay all that is asked in order to get the drink that they want or need.

Either that or they will buy other forms of alcohol to get blasted on.

Before the years of cheap alcohol the drunks used to drink methylated spirits and even shoe-polish melted and filtered.

Even the cheap wine that many used to live on will now be out of their reach.

The most important definition here is the difference between ethyl-alcohol and methyl-alcohol even although they are very close in taste.

One will make you go blind and mad and the other will just rot your gut.

HERE is an overview of both.

I read somewhere that the bootleggers used to make drinking ethyl alcohol by having stills in their backyards, but the difference between ethyl alcohol ( dangerous ) and methanol, ( deadly ), is just the temperature that it is distilled at.

The answer's easy; brew your own! I've made cider, beer and wine for years, want to try Mead next.

Yes, up here in Scotland home-brewing is a great favourite, although I must admit that it is a while since I did it.

The other point is that making spirits like Whisky Vodka and Gin etc' is still illegal and a bit dangerous to do at home or in the garden shed.

Every person to their own tastes I guess.

It was highlighted in the press recently that a few of the cheaper vodkas, Gins and whiskeys were coming into the country as completely fake distillations. At that time we were warned that many of these fake spirits looked like the real thing, ( Labels copied ), but what was in them was very dangerous stuff.

For that reason I bought a cheap UV torch so as to be able to test for the correct government print. ( The fake ones do not fluoresce under UV light ).

And if anyone is interested, HERE is a Google page that offers a good cross section of these torches. Mind you they are not good for many other uses than checking government labels.
