Why Britain is being ripped off so often ?

Post by papa_umau on Tue 01 May 2018, 12:02 pm

The OFT's report into pricing scams shows how bad we are at making important financial choices, argues Alasdair Palmer.

The Office of Fair Trading last week identified a number of ways in which retailers persuade us to buy things at higher prices than we would agree to, were we not bamboozled by the sales techniques.

Most familiar is the hidden add-on: you are offered a wonderfully low price for a computer printer or an airline ticket.

You hand over your money without realising that the price does not include printer cartridges, without which the printer cant print anything, or airport taxes, which if you dont pay you cant fly.

The extras drive up the price: sometimes they can double it. In the case of printer cartridges, you have to keep buying them, and from the same firm, so that over the life of a printer, what you pay for cartridges can end up being more than 10 times the price of the printer itself.

Had you known, you would not have bought that model. But you or rather I, given that Im speaking from experience here didnt check it out properly.

The OFT also criticised the bait sale, where the stock of discounted items is so tiny that the deals that lured you to the shop are gone by the time you arrive. But you go ahead and buy at the higher price anyway.

The "marketeers", as I call them, have studied hard about how we, the shoppers, can be hoodwinked into spending more than we naturally should, or would.

It is now almost like a war of attrition, where they keep thinking up new ideas to make us spend more money, and we struggle to find out these new ideas before we commit to any one product.

    Great stuff Paps.

I, for one, have always tried to be aware of quiet add-ons as if we do not pay attention here we can be easily fleeced.

Yes, these people do have a lot of fiddles in their planning to do us out of money.

Sadly, a lot of people are still caught by these fiddles every day.

We depend on the government watchdogs to protect us, but they seldom do the job that they were designed to do.

High-pressure sales techniques are often so clever that we cannot see them for what they are.

A great many minds in many sales companies have worked for many thousands of hours to develop software that cannot be easily seen for what it is.

This is why it is always best to study such offers very carefully and to make a decision based on what you want and not on what is promised.

    Very intelligent answer Angie.

You are so right that we are our own worst enemy as we, for some reason, seem to want to trust these people to treat us fairly.

In many cases they just don't.

I feel that there should be more education in schools about money wisdom. We Brits have always trusted our companies to treat us fairly; time for a change.

Quite right HG; there is no doubt that there are a few "worldly" subjects that our children should be taught at school before they are unleashed into the world.

"Money-wisdom" is only one of them.
