Alfie Evans' life support withdrawn, father says.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 24 Apr 2018, 11:23 am

The life support of seriously ill toddler Alfie Evans has been withdrawn, his father has said.

Tom Evans said the 23-month-old's life support was turned off on Monday but Alfie was breathing on his own and had been given oxygen.

It comes after his parents lost legal challenges against a High Court ruling in February that Alder Hey Children's Hospital could withdraw life support.

The hospital said it would "not be issuing any updates on his condition".

This saga has gone on a very long time as the parents of this little boy fought to not have the artificial support stopped.

Now that it has been stopped and Alfie is breathing on his own we may find that the brain damage the boy was said to have suffered is not as sever as at first thought.

All I can say is best of luck to this family as the next few days and weeks go by.

The little lad has now been breathing on his own for a number of days, and I for one wonder if he might make some kind of recovery if well is left alone.

I am sure we will see over the next few days or weeks.

If the doctors are right, even if Archie is able to breath on his own, he will be unable to do much else as he is so severely brain-damaged.

I wonder if his parents are really thinking about how hard it will be to care for a virtual "vegetable", ( sorry, I hate that term ).

I sometimes wonder if they are not just doing it for the publicity and the money that will be raised.

Well, whatever the reason might be for all of this, it is now moot as the little lad has died.

Maybe a line can now be finally drawn under this awful story.

I am sorry for the little lad. I understand the parents' anguish, but to make him wait to die while his family fought the NHS in the courts, when he had no quality of life was, in my opinion, wrong.

His family had been told there was no chance of him recovering. I think the NHS was wrong to prevent him going to Italy or Germany though. I think they were hoping for a miracle like the other child Asha; but Alfie's case was different.

Yes, at the end the parents were grasping at straws.

At least now, they can go away quietly and grieve for their son in peace.
