Hither Green 'burglar' stabbing: Man, 78, arrested

A 78-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a suspected burglar was stabbed to death.

The man, named locally as Richard Osborn-Brooks, discovered two intruders in South Park Crescent, Hither Green, south-east London, at about 00:45 BST.

One suspect, armed with a screwdriver, forced the man into his kitchen where a struggle ensued and he was stabbed, Scotland Yard said.

The 38-year-old was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead at 03:40.

Of course we do not yet know what will actually happen to this man who protected his home from two alleged burglars, but he was arrested and charged with murder.

One would hope that, as we see this incident, the "murder" charge could be dropped to "culpable homicide" and the man should not be prosecuted severely for defending himself and his home and family.

This conviction could cause all kinds of trouble when and if the people think that this man was dealt with too severely.

( In many American states people have the right to kill a burgler if they are attacked in their own homes ).

Maybe we should have this right too ?

    Anybody ?

While I would not like us to have the freedoms that they have in America we certainly need the right to be able to defend ourselves against attack in our own homes.

This needs sorting out, and fast.

Common sense has prevailed here as the police have said that there will be no further charges against this man.

Something tells me that they listened to public opinion.

Yes, there was the biggest out-cry that they had heard about anything like this before.

All it took was a bit of plain common sense.

I think it all comes down to, if the response to any crook that is breaking in is, a purely defensive move then the home-owner has every right to defend his own, and his family's life and his property.
