UK ivory ban among 'toughest' in the world, says Gove.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 03 Apr 2018, 12:34 pm

A British ban on ivory sales is to be one of the toughest in the world, the environment secretary has said.

Michael Gove said the sale of ivory of any age, with limited exceptions, will be banned in an effort to reduce elephant poaching.

The move, which is still to be signed into law, comes after a consultation in which more than 60,000 people supported the introduction of a complete ban.

Campaigners say around 20,000 elephants are killed each year for their tusks.

Previous bans only applied to ivory produced after 1947. The new law is even tougher than the changes proposed in the October 2017 consultation.

As a conservationist and one who has a great interest in the protection of the endangered species in nature I believe that this is a great move that should be copied by all of the countries of the world so that this despicable trade can be stopped completely.

I also believe that the laws in countries like Africa and India, where elephants are mostly found, should be amended so that any poachers found killing elephants should be summarily shot my the rangers that have the job protect these endangered species.

That's all very well and good, but can we depend on the rest of the world taking this stance ?

That cannot be guaranteed Zathrus, but if we give the lead many of the other countries of the world might follow with that kind of a ban on the ivory trade.

I guess we are just going to have to wait and see about that.

The Far East trade in Ivory has been established for hundreds of years and I don't think that they will care as much about the preservation of the species as we do.

If we could stop this particular trade we could cut the ivory buying and selling to next to nothing.

Yes, that would be a very difficult thing to do if the authorities in those countries are not willing to catch and seriously punish and of these people.

This needs to be a truly world-wide partnership.
