UK passports: Firm appeals move to make them in France.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 03 Apr 2018, 12:25 pm

The existing manufacturer of British passports is appealing against the decision to use a Franco-Dutch supplier after Brexit.

De La Rue lost the 490m contract to Gemalto, which is based in France, in March.

The British company admitted its bid was not the cheapest but said it was "the highest quality and technically most secure".

The Home Office said the chosen firm met the needs of the passport service.

The burgundy passport, in use since 1988, will revert to its original blue and gold colour from October 2019. However, people are expected to keep their current passports until they expire.

As far as I am concerned, it is ludicrous that our new passports should be made by a private firm in France as manufactury there can not guarantee the security that British de-La-Rue has proven by it's many years of service to the British passport.

Just giving the contract to a French company, because "they were the cheapest" is no way to make such an important decision.

I personally hope that the De-La-Rue appeal is upheld and that our passports are once again made by a tried, true, and trusted, company.

    Any comments folks ?

This is a total Tory nonsense.

Why, if we have a tried and true passport maker in Britain, would we need a foreign one.

After Brexit this could be very problematic.

I hope De-La-Rue eventually get the contract.

I cannot support you more on this thought as it is totally ridiculous that during the Brexit crisis the Tory government are giving this passport contract to a Dutch/French company.

There is still time to change their minds if we let them know that what they are doing is wrong.

It is outrageous that the present government are giving the job to some strange French company when we already know that De-La-Rue can do the job.

To save a few quid we might find out that the passports that this French company will give is might not be as secure as the ones we already have.

Yes, of course you are right, but I worry that this French/Dutch company has greased the palm of some Tory politician.
