Comparison websites LEGALLY allowed to hide best prices.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 19 Mar 2018, 11:45 am

Moneywise: Comparison site rip off latest news update - how websites are hiding the cheapest results ... A representative for Go Compare told us that "Switching in the energy market is still pitifully low 66% of households are still on expensive standard variable tariffs, and are almost certainly still being taken advantage of.

Around 10 million people use price comparison websites each year in the UK. They're quick, convenient and save us a lot of time shopping around. But not many of us realise that we're paying around 650 million a year in commission for the privilege.

A recent YouGov survey found that consumers thought they paid between 5% and 10% in commission when they bought something through a comparison website - in reality, the average commission is 24%. But is there any way of avoiding these hidden charges?

    Moneywise investigates.

Comparison websites make their money in a number of ways. The simplest and most obvious is from advertising on the website. A second income stream comes from sponsored listings, whereby companies pay to have their products appear at the top of search results.

Read all about these sites from Moneywise, HERE

It is bad enough that we are being charged such a high premium on commission, but it is even worse when we realise that we are not even getting the cheapest deal at the top of the comparison list.

If this isn't fraud then it is certainly taking advantage of the customers that keep them going.

I had not realised that the levels of commission paid to these "top" companies was as big as it is.

This knowledge makes me less likely to use the comparison sites for just about anything.

    Thanks again Paps.

    My pleasure Zathrus.

I did not even realise myself that the levels of commission, ( passed on to the site-users customers ), was as high as it is.

It is even worse when we now know that the comparison sites are LEGALLY allowed to hide the best prices available.

That has to be a form of fraud has it not, as deliberately, and legally, hiding the best deals in a company that purports to show us the best deals in comparison to other offers can only be seen as a fiddle.

I would concur on that Angie.

It seems very strange that something like that could be both "legal" and yet some sort of fraud.

The phrase Running with the fox and hunting with the hounds comes to my mind on this one.

Yeah, and it is also a bit like being a double agent too.

Serving two masters is a very difficult thing to do without being found out.
