Winter Olympics stats: Norway's record haul.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 26 Feb 2018, 12:28 pm

Norway, with a 5.2 million population, won 39 medals, and topped so many podiums they ran out of commemorative shoes, Germany enjoyed a gloriously golden fortnight, and the United States' women "saved" their country's 2018 Winter Olympics.

There were 102 gold medals up for grabs across 15 sports in Pyeongchang, with the likes of big air snowboarding, mixed-doubles curling, mass start speed skating and mixed-team alpine skiing added to the programme.

Ester Ledecka won two golds in two different sports, Marit Bjorgen became the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time, and five was the magic number for Great Britain's competitors.

HERE BBC Sport looks at the stats behind the medals in Pyeongchang.

OK, Norway has winter sports facilities all year round, which must help to produce so many champions, but this is STILL a phenomenal result for such a small population country.

All we can really say here is: Well done Norway as they beat large nations like America, Russia, Germany and Canada.

As a little extra watch wonderful fifteen year old Alina Zagitova's routine to take the gold medal in figure skating HERE

It was very enjoyable, I'm still catching up with some things. Glad our guys did well, considering we don't (usually!) get much snow.

Anyone know which channel the Paralympic Winter games is on?

Haven't heard yet about this, but I was speaking to a para-athlete in a wheelchair when I was waiting to collect the wife from her Better Hearted exercise club and he was saying that he was training in The peak complex for the winter athletics competition at the Commonwealth Games. ( He was a wheelchair curler ).

Thank you. Thinking about it, I'm not sure there are Winter Paralympics. I know Channel 4 do the Regular Paralympics.

I haven't heard anything about "winter Paralympics" either.

I do know that the very clever engineers that design and make the para-aids make some very special things for the disabled athletes to use.

I saw a photo last week of a small square carriage that had short skies attached which were designed for a legless vet to use when ski-ing.

He even had short poles made for him with which to guide the carriage.

You have to take your hats off for these guys-n-gals as they very often do not let their disability stop them from doing great things.
