UK BIG FREEZE: Flights cancelled as Met Office forecasts more SNOW

Post by papa_umau on Tue 06 Feb 2018, 12:48 pm

More threats of further snow from The Met Office.

FLIGHTS were cancelled in Britain amid the snow chaos on Monday and the country is set to be hit by more white stuff this week as the freezing wintry conditions sweep across Britain.

Weather forecasters have warned that the bitter weather is expected to grip Britain for the remainder of this week and could even stay until next week.

The bone-chilling temperatures nearly fell to below -15C last night as the UK faced the coldest night in six years and parts of Britain were blanketed in snow.

Airliner British Airways was forced to cancel around 80 short-haul flights to and from Heathrow, including three south trips to Aberdeen and Milans Linate airport.

Get the full report from The Express HERE.

I was wondering if this is the coldest winter Britain has even had ?

What say you, good Robsters ?

'63 was colder for longer, but this one the cold comes and goes.

Sorry HG, but my memory does not go back to 63.

Maybe I just put such memories out of mind.

Our winter is not finished yet and the weather forecasters are still telling us that the cold is to continue.

I really enjoyed the warmth in Lanzarote but shortly after returning I was hit with a very deep and chesty cold.

I was speaking to a number of elderly people during my holiday and many of them take around three months or so out of the winter there so that they can enjoy the warmth all year round.

I am considering this myself for the future.

My memories of the winter of '63 are vivid, as I was up in North Wales on a Mountain activity Course in the first week of February. Orienteering, rock climbing, Abseiling, skiing and even camping! It was extremely cold, even the sea edges were freezing! We didn't get a thaw until March! I remember seeing lorries stranded on the roads because their diesel had 'Waxed up' and wouldn't flow to the engine.

I think that info' rings a bell with me too.

For too long now we have been accepting soft winters, and when we get a hard one we think we are bad done by.

I remember as a child snow storms blowing across the park where I lived and building drifts ten feet high. The local authorities had to send guys with shovels to dig passageways so that we could go to school.

It was weird to see snow walls ten feet high on either side of the pathway.

In those days we went to school come rain, hail, or ten feet drifts of snow.

Yes, our kids have become soft too.

If we saw just how hard it is for children to get to school during winter weather in Northern Canada, and the Baltic areas we would thank our lucky stars about the "severe" weather we get here.

The bookies say that they give a 2-to1-on chance that this is going to be reported as having been the coldest January on record.

Coral is offering 2-1 on odds on January to be the coldest on record, while the bookie also has 5-1 odds on 2018 to be the coldest year ever.

The bookies are usually right about these things.

I guess we are just going to have to wait and see about this.

We have had several wintry showers today, pellets of snow, but not quite hard enough to be hail.

OK, I live in Scotland, and as such I should be used to the cold, but, I do not remember the temperatures being below freezing for so long, and every day.
