    Off topic exam sparks protests.

Post by papa_umau on Fri 02 Feb 2018, 11:36 am

'Off-topic' exam sparks protest by Basingstoke students.

Biology students have challenged their A Level exam after claiming none of the questions were on topics they had studied.

Alexandra Elkins and Annabel Smith, who are studying at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke, now want to re-sit the exam with a new series of questions

More than 4,000 people from across the country have signed a protest petition on this subject.

The Pearson group which provides the Edexcel exams said its papers "accurately reflect the curriculum".

Read more on this from The BBC News HERE

We have heard this kind of complaint from students for many years but never has it generated such a furore and support for one particular exam.

It will be interesting to find out just how this develops.

This is so annoying, as I have seen this happening in many exams before.

The teachers teach the curriculum and the exam boards make up the questions based on subjects that have just not been taught.

Surely if the teaching sticks to the curriculum and the exams are set on that precise curriculum nothing should go wrong in this respect.

Someone, in my estimation, is not sticking to the curriculum if this can happen.

I know there are more than one Exam board, is it possible that where territories overlap this could happen?

I don't think so HG as the curriculum is set to a national standard.

    HERE is it's framework.

    It certainly does.

Something, somewhere is being done wrong when this happens.

On this occasion we cannot blame the kids.

I remember it well when I took my "O" levels.

I was a studious guy, but it seems to me that the questions that were asked had not been taught as subjects.

Maybe I was just imagining it all. Evil or Very Mad

The national curriculum question-paper writing is done by a private firm called Pearson Edexcel.

Once again, the private sector gets into our public interest subjects.

    When will they ever learn.

    Well said Angie.

How many times in the past have private companies working on public contracts made a mess of it.

This is just the latest one.

When I was at school there were two Examlnation Boards. Oxford and Cambridge. All my schools used Cambridge. The Exams were straightforward as regard to questions asked, and I had little trouble, except with Maths, which was never my strong point.

With that knowledge to the fore maybe we should go back to these days so that the private sector can no longer muck things up for the kids.
