Developing countries warned UK could cut foreign aid.

The UK could cut its aid to developing countries that fail to invest in their own people, the international development secretary has said.

Penny Mordaunt, the new Energy Development Secretary, told the Daily Telegraph she "won't invest" when others should put "their hands in their pockets".

The government is committed to spending 0.7% of national income on overseas aid and currently spends £13bn each year.

Ms Mordaunt said she wanted governments of developing countries to "step up and take responsibility".

As a confirmed lefty this idea generates mixed emotions in me.

I can see that there might be many more ways this money could be spent at home, ( it does not need a lot of imagination to come to this conclusion ), but a rich country like Britain SHOULD hold some responsibility for helping starving and diseased people in  desperately poor countries.

Is this an either/or subject, or should we spend less abroad and spend more here at home ?

    What say you ?

    Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

It is easy to just say that we should always start at home when helping poor countries, but it is also fair to say that Britain should be able to send foreign aid without leaving our own people in strife.

In other words: "Charity begins at home".

It seems that, at least in Britain, that does not happen.

Up to now, we have continued to invest heavily in India and some other rapidly developing countries; They have taken the money and , instead of helping the people, have invested it in Nuclear and Space industries.

It is time for this to stop, especially as India won't even arrange sanitation for the whole country. Young women being encouraged into arranged marriages are refusing, unless the husband to be invests in proper toilet arrangements.

Yes, this has happened all around the world when any third world country comes into the first world.

Instead of investing the money in the people and the infrastructure it simply goes into the pockets of the super-rich and the military.

I think that this is a basic human failing.

A perfect example of this is what is going on in North Korea at the moment.
