Patient app 'saves thousands of nursing hours'

The woman behind the app says it has made things easier for nurses and helped them to quickly identify the sickest patients.

An app designed by Great Ormond Street Hospital staff that replaces the traditional clipboard at the end of patients' beds has saved thousands of nursing hours and been hailed as a pioneering use of technology.

Developed by GOSH clinical site practitioner and nurse Sarah Newcombe, the app enables staff to enter the vital signs of up to 350 patients using handheld devices rather than with pen and paper.

The system generates automatic alerts to relevant specialist teams at the hospital if patients show signs of deterioration.

It also enables staff to communicate directly with each other, and crucially they do not need to leave the bedside if they require help with acutely ill patients.

While this sounds like a great advance for the creation and follow-up of patient conditions, I wonder just how robust these tablets will be when the hackers come knocking.

    Opinions please.

We have already seen these tablets in use in the TV hospital and emergency room programmes.

Yes, I had noticed that too Zathrus.

Apart from the crackability of these new devices, eventually the working staff will come to depend on them.

When I was a civil servant I was well aware of what happens when tech goes wrong and we are forced to revert to pen and paper.

    VERY destructive.

The use of pen and paper is now becoming obsolete.

Even in teaching these pads are a great boon when looking for specific curriculum data.

It is when they are online and they are networked that they become easy victims to the hackers.

Sorry, nothing beats the Mark 1 eyeball and the hands of an experienced nurse.
