Train fares set to rise by the largest amount in five years.

Train fares: UK rail passengers face biggest rise for five years.

Union says announcement that average ticket prices will increase by 3.4% in January is ‘another kick in the teeth’

UK rail fares will rise by 3.4% in January – the largest increase for five years, train companies have announced.

Fares for all journeys in 2018 have been published, showing an average rise slightly below the 3.6% set by the government in August for regulated fares, which include season tickets.

Rail operators said it showed the industry was attempting to keep down the cost of travel.

Get the full and worrying report from The Guardian HERE

"Keeping down the cost of travel"..... I don't think so.

All this shows is that the present government are allowing these greedy companies to make our lives more unpleasant and rail travel less competitive.

It is time that all of the ail companies were taken back into the public domain, and then we might see true value for money in rail travel.

What I want to know is: why does the government allow these private train companies to keep banging up the fares past the national inflation rate ?

Their franchises could be removed, but nothing gets done.

The Labour Party has promised that the rail companies will be brought back into the public domain.

This is NOT going to happen with the Tories in charge.

Yes, when and if the Labour Party get back in they have promised to re-nationalise a number of things, including rail travel, but once they get into power they will probably find that they cannot afford to do it properly.

It is great and easy to make promises when out of power, but when they are back in control doing it will be a whole different ballgame.

Sadly, you are right about that Angie.

Promises made when any party are out of government seldom come to fruition when they come back into power.

I would still like to see them having a chance to fix this particular problem.
