Brexit: UK 'ready to pay more to the EU'

Post by papa_umau on Tue 21 Nov 2017, 11:26 am

Brexit supporters in the cabinet have agreed the UK should offer to pay more money to the EU as it leave

But no formal offer will be made until the EU agrees to begin talking about a new trade deal with the UK.

No new figure has been given - but it is thought it could be up to 40bn, which would be double what the UK's offers so far add up to.

The UK and the EU have yet to agree on the so-called "divorce bill" with the UK due to leave the EU in March 2019.

Some Conservative MPs have reacted angrily to the possibility of the UK agreeing to pay more - yesterday one, Nigel Evans, said it would be like a "ransom payment" to the EU while another, Robert Halfon, said it would make voters "go bananas".

Have I not already said so in these pages ?

I knew from the start that the 12bn that was originally offered would NEVER break the log-jam that has been stopping the negotiations from progressing.

I still think that the figure needed to buy out of the EU will be more like 60bn than the 40bn that will be offered to get back into the negotiations.

"Watch this space" is the phrase that fits here, I think.

The EU negotiators actually want us to stay in the EU and for that reason they are going to make it as hard as possible to get out without it costing us a king's ransom.

I don't think that even 40bn is going to be enough to help us to move on into trade and Customs Union talks.

After that get-out sum has been decided on and paid we are going to come up against the next log-jam of the discussions about the border between Northern and Southern Ireland.

A figure of around 60bn has already been mooted by the European negotiators, and I don't think we will be able to get out for much less.

It is all going to come to a head very soon.

"Ready to pay more", but how much more is Davis or May authorised to offer to get the EU negotiators to move on to trade and border talks ?

If they really want to look as if they are negotiating an exit deal then they will have to conform to the requirements of the 27 EU countries.

THAT is not going to be an easy thing to do.
