Is social media an easy way to rip off intellectual rights ?

Post by papa_umau on Tue 21 Nov 2017, 11:02 am

The theft of intellectual rights is very easy now.

Platforms like Instagram and Tumblr have provided today’s artists and designers with a way to display their work that previous generations could only have dreamed of.

You don’t need an agent and a pile of cash to get publicity any more. Simply do your thing, take a snap and upload it to your page which is then transmitted far and wide to audiences around the world.

But this level of accessibility can come at a price.

In recent times, big companies have been called out for plagiarism. A few months ago, Zara was called out for ripping off independent designers’ ideas. And now Topshop is being accused of the same by this patch-designer, Hannah Hill, who designs under the name of Hanecdote, claims that her Halloween Queen patch was copied by Topshop, without any credit – or cash being offered.

Maybe it is time that the laws on the theft of intellectual rights were changed to take in the problems that are arising via the social networking sites ?

    What say you ?

There doesn't seem to be any way to protect people from intellectual theft on the internet, as it is a dog-eat-dog business just about anywhere.

Mind you, people who put original art on the internet have to expect it to be plagiarised or copied as the internet is totally unpoliced in this respect.

Yes, one would think that artists and others who create original works might be careful about publishing this work on the wide-open internet before taking out a patent on it.

I don't think that artists actually "patent" their work as any original art work is extremely difficult to copy.

Prints or engravings are just ways to copy original art that is not really original by the time it is put up for sale.

Having said that, there is still basic "copyright" available to all, at a cost.

Here is one way to do it: https://www.protectmywork.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3Y-B1MnZ1wIVwpPtCh0QVAbWEAAYASAAEgLwRfD_BwE

    Thanks for that Angie.

It is good to know that copywriting is so easy.

Its ridiculously easy to protect your intellectual property.

One of the ways I protect my writings is to copy them to paper, and post them to myself. When the envelope arrives, file it unopened. Number the envelopes with a filing code for easy identification, so you don't take the wrong one to court. The postmark, if a case comes to court, is your guarantee. Once you have a court judgement in your favour you can cite the case number and date as extra evidence.

If you want extra protection, post Recorded or even Special Delivery.

Things too big to be posted, can be protected with a photograph of said item alongside that day's newspaper. The photograph can be posted as before.

    Great advice HG.

Very few people will know about this trick.

I have even used it myself a couple of times.
