Scrap student loan interest and extend payback time.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 30 Oct 2017, 11:55 am

Scrapping interest on student loans and extending the time limit on paying it back could help to avoid a future debt crisis, a centre-right think tank says.

The UK 2020 report said the measures would "bring down costs" for students and graduates.

Changing payback time limits from 30 to 50 years could also save billions of pounds of taxpayers' money, it said.

Ministers are reviewing the student finance system.

They said sustainable university funding was a priority.

The PM recently abandoned an increase in tuition fees due next year, announcing a review of the whole student finance system in England.

Those graduating from university in summer 2017 left with an average debt of 50,000, according to estimates from the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

I suppose that crumbs are better than nothing, but I do not know why the Westminster government cannot just stop charging any tuition fees and therefore make the loans easier to pay back, like has happened in Scotland.

    Anybody ?

Instead ofabandoning an increase in tuition fees due next year I too would much rather see these fees scrapped altogether in England and Wales.

This is nothing but another trick to make it look like the government gives a damn, when they obviously don't.

    Too right Zathrus.

These austerity-crazy Tories seem to have no idea what the people of this country want.

If they scrapped a few of their flagship policies costing many billions of pounds they would have the money to give us a world-class NHS and education system.

What is worse, is that all of this austerity pain is not cutting the deficit by a penny and it is now running at around SIXTY-NINE BILLION POUNDS.

    Wow, those figures are crazy.

I find it funny, if not tragic, that the Labour party were castigated for borrowing to spend and yet here is the Tories with an even bigger deficit than at any time before.

And, life in The Treasury is going to become very difficult once the extraction bill has to be paid for getting out of Europe.

It is then that we might see many of the flagship Tory policies of Crossrail, HST, Trident, and a few others, breaking the bank.
