    Another parking fine ripoff

Parking fines to SOAR as drivers penalised while meters AREN’T UPGRADED for new pound coin

UK MOTORISTS could be unfairly penalised with expensive fines after it emerged thousands of car parking machines have not been upgraded to accept the new one pound coin.

Motorists may incur penalties for parking if they do not have the old £1 coins, despite the change no longer classed as legal tender.

The British Parking Association (BPA) said some councils are not planning to update their machines for five months, when it will be compulsory for them to undergo annual maintenance.

As many as 5,000 car parking machines in the UK, which serve between 30 and 200 parking spaces each, are not yet capable of accepting the new pound coin, according to The Daily Telegraph.

It is estimated the delay in upgrading the machines could result in nearly 200,000 extra parking fines issued over the period, equating to 1,200 a day.

I would hope that if we are unable to pay for parking with the new pound coin then parking fines given out by not-upgraded machines should be null and void.

This premise needs to be tested.

    That's ridiculous.

Parking fines should not be charged if the machine that was used does not accept the new pound coins and the old coins are now no longer legal tender.

Surely any fines levied under those circumstances should be immediately voided.

They, the parking enforcers, would say that you can pay at these machines using fifty pence pieces and other change and that you do not have to use pound coins.

I suppose they are right there, but that means that we have to hold a lot of heavy change in our pockets and purses.

Quite right Papa. Most of us do not carry a lot of change these days and the pound coin is the favourite to be kept in purses.

They should get these machines upgraded to take the new twelve-sided pound coin and then we would have no reason not to pay for our parking.

I would like to think that if a test case was taken to court under these conditions there would be a precedent set for not being able to fine parkers because they have no old £1.00 coins left.
