Vauxhall: Union calls for support to protect jobs

Post by papa_umau on Mon 16 Oct 2017, 12:20 pm

The government should give "a clear signal" that it will support the automotive industry through Brexit to protect jobs at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant, the Unite union says.

The union is calling for reassurance from the plant's French owners, PSA Group, that they will continue to invest in the facility.

But Unite said the government also needed to provide more certainty.

PSA Group has announced 400 job losses in Ellesmere Port due to falling sales.

Read the whole report on this from The BBC HERE

Of course we should always expect the unions to step in when jobs are lost, but I do not think these job-losses have anything to do with Brexit.

The reason why Vauxhall are cutting jobs is because fewer and fewer people now want petrol and diesel motor vehicles.

This is just the first sign of the practice in Britain but we may see many more jobs lost in the fossil-fuel burning car sector as other carmakers cut their manufacturing numbers.

What they should be doing, is replacing the polluting engines of petrol and diesel cars with electric and hybrid ones so that the loss of sales of poisonous-emission vehicles is replaced by the requirement for clean cars.

    Anybody ?

Yes, as the days and the weeks go by until diesel and petrol cars are banned from towns and cities we are going to see many of the jobs that are actively making such polluting cars being lost from all of the motor manaufacturers.

It's inevitable, so why are the government not helping these carmakers to transition to electric and hybrid vehicles ?

There is still a lot of resistance from the makers of the internal-combustion engine and their oil-mogul pals and they will eventually be forced to move with the times.

We are at a watershed in the making and selling of polluting vehicles and the quicker the government and the motor manufacturers realise this the better for all.

I think that artificial monetary support, that the Unions are asking for always has to be the wrong way to go as so long as these manufacturing industries are kept alive by subsidies they will remain as subsidy-junkies.

They need to be successful in making their own profits and if they need to change over to electric and hybrid cars to do it then I see no reason why a small and short-term subsidy to help to enable this changeover could not be payable.

I think I am winning a few of you petrol-heads over as I push the electric future.

As the only vehicle I am now able to use is a mobility scooter, I'm already there!

Sadly, you have little or no choice about that, electric disabled scooters are just too small to go on the roads with.

There are some great mobility scooters out there today, the trouble is that they can be very expensive and they do not always command a full subsidy from the Social Services.

True Zathrus, but I don't get Social Services help, so I'm on my own with that.

The ones that need it the most are usually the ones that cannot get it.
