Brexit: David Davis aims to make EU talks progress.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 10 Oct 2017, 11:58 am

Brexit Secretary David Davis is aiming to make progress with the EU as he heads to Brussels for the crucial fifth round of Brexit negotiations .

It is the last round of talks before EU leaders meet to decide if sufficient progress has been made to open talks on the UK's future trade relations.

And it comes after ministers sought to ease disquiet among Brexit-backing MPs about the UK's strategy.

Prime Minister Theresa May is currently hosting her cabinet at Downing Street.

Contingency plans in case the UK has to leave the EU with no deal in place are "well under way", a minister has said.

Dominic Raab said while the UK had to "strive for the very best outcome" from Brexit negotiations, it had to "prepare for all eventualities".

I was shocked to hear of this plan, as if it gets underway all that will happen will be that as far as Brexit is concerned Britain will simply step off the edge of a cliff. ( Of course this might just be a case of brinkmanship, with the EU being afraid that if we do leave without a deal great damage could result ).

I always suspected that Theresa May wanted an "easy" exit from Europe but the only way that would happen would be if we withdraw from the EU without negotiating any deal.

No deal, in my estimation, would be a bad deal.

Do hope that is not the way that this will play out as without a deal, immigration will stay the same, trade with the EU afterwards would be up-in-the-air, and leaving the customs union without a deal would be disastrous for trade with Europe.

More to come on this I think.

Unfortunately the EU appears to hold all the winning cards. They can veto us at any time they wish. I don't think we have a snowball's chance in a blast furnace!

As we are the ones that want out, it will be not surprising if the EU make us pay for getting out in as many ways as they can.

Yes, they have the ball at their feet.

Maybe May hopes that the threat to pull out without a deal will gee up the opposition.

If she does, all I have to say is that is no way to do a negotiation.

At this stage I think it is brinkmanship to threaten to pull out without any deal, as we all know that something will have to be done with the two-way trade that will be lost at a hard brexit.

Also the Customs Union needs to be sorted out so that we will then know what the Irish border will look like.

The British negotiators know that to jump off that proverbial cliff would do great harm to many of the companies that depend on cross border trade.

It is just not on !

Davis will not make much progress if he tries bluffing the EU negotiators that we are getting ready for a hard Brexit.

People don't respond well to threats.

    Very true Angie.

The thing is that because it is us that want to escape from the EU and not the other way round Michel Barnier is going to hold our hands to the flame while these negotiations go on.

They want very little from us but we want a lot from them.
