Labour plans a new tax on bookmakers.

Labour proposes new tax on bookmakers

Labour says it would consider forcing bookmakers to pay a levy to help treat problem gamblers.

Deputy leader Tom Watson will say the cash would be used for NHS treatment and to end the "destructive cycle of addiction".

Speaking at the party conference in Brighton, he will announce a review of the extent of the problem.

Meanwhile, Labour will also call on the government to spend an extra £500m on a winter bailout fund for the NHS.

Labour has vowed to tackle Britain's "hidden epidemic of gambling addiction", and earlier this month proposed a ban on adverts for betting firms on football shirts.

Mr Watson will return to the theme in his speech to delegates on Tuesday, saying some companies are "deliberately targeting our poorest communities even as hundreds of thousands of lives are ruined by addiction".

"Gambling addiction is an illness and it's about time it was taken seriously," he will say.

I hope that they finally put a brake on the growth of high-stakes fixed betting machines too, as these devilish things are the worst ways that betting addiction can be formed.

This has been talked about for many years, but year-on-year, nothing ever gets done.

    Comments please.

    Very true Paps.

Mind you if we have to wait another four years for the next general election, and as a lot of water will have gone under that particular bridge, Labour's plans could change and Corbyn might not still even be the Labour leader by that time.

Yes, as someone once said, "a week in politics is a very long time".

But something tells me that Corbyn will go on to bring a lot of previously traditional Labour supporters under his wing.

As long as he doesn't make any stupid moves like Theresa May did, he should be alright for the long term.

Yes, these middle-of-the-road Labour voters used to be there so why not try really hard to get them back.

Surely we can do that in the four years that we will wait for another general election.

By that time the Tories will probably have ripped themselves apart.

Jeremy Corbyn will look to 'force an early general election' as poll gives him lead for the first time.

Labour leader makes the claim before speaking at Unison’s annual conference in Brighton.

Jeremy Corbyn has said he will look to “force an early general election” after claiming it was “ludicrous” to suggest Theresa May could stay in power.

The Labour leader made the claim before speaking at Unison’s annual conference in Brighton and also added he was pleased with the party’s recent surge in opinion polls.

Mr Corbyn’s approval rating has been on the rise since the general election and it appears he will now attempt to pile pressure on the Prime Minister.

Something to watch for I think.

I like that idea, bookies have been raking it in for years.

There's an old saying that fits here: "Have you ever seen a poor bookie".

It's the fixed-odds gambling machines that need to be heavy regulated as they are called the "crack cocaine of gambling".
