Police Chief: don't visit crime victims; e-mail them.

Police chief: 'Don't visit crime victims, email them'

A TOP policeman said today there was no point in over-stretched officers visiting victims of minor crimes.

Giles York, Chief Constable of Sussex, said it was more “convenient” for officers to deal with the public by phone or online.

And victims can help investigations by emailing crime scene images and composing their own witness statements, he said.

He defended response times for the 101 non-emergency police number, saying seven minutes “isn’t long” for crime victims to have to wait.

But his remarks infuriated campaigners who said it was evidence of police becoming increasingly remote.

Well folks, do you see this as just another bit of evidence that the police are now getting to be too distant from the people, or not ?

Wow, what's with the heavy bold text Paps ?

Getting back to the question: Of course most people will think it is crazy to try to contact victims via e-mail, as a lot of people do not have the ability to receive and send e-mail messages.

    Hi Zathrus.

Sorry about the heavy and large text in that piece, but this shows a weakness in the new software that Forumotion have introduced when the accompanying HTML text tags are carried over with and from the original via copy and paste.

This is actually very difficult to change once it has been taken over from the original pages.

I will work on it and try to find out how to do this.

    ...........................................

And yes, it is silly for this policy of some of the police administrations to be done as even the ability to receive texts never mind e-mails is not universal yet.

Even a phone call or a letter would do for the police to keep the people informed of what is going on.

Got to agree there Angie; even a phone call or a letter will reach everybody they want to reach.
