Green man road crossings 'too fast'

Post by papa_umau on Tue 22 Aug 2017, 12:14 pm

The green man walking sign on pedestrian crossings may be too fast for elderly people to cross the road safely, suggest new draft guidelines for local councils.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence wants to make it easier for people with limited mobility to get out and about.

Most crossings allow between four and seven seconds before the green man starts flashing.

But many people are slower than this.

The average speed for the elderly men is set at 3ft (0.9m) per second, and 2.6ft per second for older women.

Get the full story from the BBCHERE

I have often thought that these light-controlled pedestrian crossings did not give most people enough time to cross before the green man starts to flash.

This does not only effect the infirm and the elderly, but it effects the time that a crowd of people have to get across the road safely.

These pedestrian crossings could have two seconds added to the time allowed and this would be hardly noticed by the vehicle drivers.

    That's a great one Paps.

I am fit and fast on my feet, but even I can get caught out when the green man starts to flash.

Maybe it will take a change in the law for this flaw to be fixed at every pedestrian crossing.

I saw an article on that exact subject in my Daily Record yesterday.

Now that this need has hit the national newspapers, maybe the government will pay attention to the problem.

I totally agree that as a non-driver at the moment the walking man on the light-controlled pedestrian crossings does change far too fast for me.

I have a dear friend who is in a wheelchair, and with minimum power in her arms, and she just cannot get across the road fast enough to feel safe.

Even after I finally do get a car I will not change my mind on that.

Yes, the timing of light-controlled pedestrian crossings is going to have to be adjusted, as the time given for this to happen has to be set at the speed of the slowest walker.

With lots of access being upgraded for disabled people all around the country, the time allowed for crossing on the green flashing and walking man is going to have to be fixed too.

And another thing: Many people do not realise that while the lights are at flashing amber for the vehicles and the green man is flashing, the pedestrians still have right of way !

It scares me too. When I use my Rollator, I can still only get halfway across before the audible warning stops. I wouldn't have a hope in my wheelchair!

The government know all this too and I have no clue why they have not fixed the problem by extending the time that the standing green man flashes.
