UK General Election 2017: 1.8 million Scots votes 'wasted'

Up to 1.8 million Scottish votes were "wasted" in June's general election because they had no impact on the result, a study claims.

The Electoral Reform Society found 66.4% of votes did not go towards electing an MP under Westminster's first-past-the-post (FPTP) system.

It said there had been a "sea of wasted votes and a surge in tactical voting".

It added it was time for a proportional system for Westminster elections, similar to the one used at Holyrood.

Get the full and astounding report from The BBCHERE

I have suspected that the desire, in Scotland, to elect the Scottish Nationalists did nothing towards stopping the Tories from getting in.

I was as guilty as anybody else in this respect as I was thinking about "independence" in this vote more than keeping out the Tories.

If the Labour Party had been as strong as it used to be in Scotland, and the mass of the Scottish voters had voted Labour instead of SNP The Tories would have been totally defeated.

Sometimes, we Nationalists are our own worst enemies.

Yes, the vote in Scotland was an abortion, as while it voted in the SNP it did nothing to defeat the Tories in Westminster.

    Maybe next time eh ?

What it did do was send more SNP members to Westminster, whereby they had some party power, but the Labour party did not get enough seats to defeat the Tories on their own.

I think it will take a great rise of the old labour Party in Scotland to manage that.

The thing is that if the SNP members in Westminster were to had joined with the Labour Party, just like the Tories did with the Northern Irish DUP we may have seen a different result.

In any case, the next time that there is a general election the SNP can still throw in with the Labour Party, the greens, and maybe even the Liberal Democrats, and that total number of seats would beat the ones that the Tories could cobble together.

It is long past time they were OUT and this cannot come soon enough for me.

It is not as easy as you seem to think Angie, to make such alliances in Westminster, as these three factions are too poles apart to make firm partnerships against the Tories. Sadly so.

They may lose most of their animosities to each-other in the next general election, but that is now a long time to go if the next GE is started at the normal five year period.

Theresa May might not survive that long, and if she is usurped by her Tory friends, as happened with Maggie Thatcher, another general election may have to be called very soon afterwards.

Unfortunately, where I currently live is Tory Central. Planning my next move to Wales, and hopefully soon.
