The government says that motorway lessons are to be started.

Motorway lessons for learner drivers confirmed for 2018

As the first taste of motorway driving can be an anxious experience for some, learner drivers in England, Wales and Scotland will be allowed to have lessons on the motorway by next year, the government has announced.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said lessons would be in a dual-control car with an approved driving instructor.
Currently only those who have passed their test can drive on a motorway, but in 2015 the DfT said it would consider a law change.

    ........................................................................................

I wondered about that as after I passed my test a couple of years ago I was very nervous about driving on the motorway. It is a whole new ball-game when motorway driving needs to be done.

At first I found lane discipline very daunting, especially when there was heavy lorries looming above me on both sides.

I think it is a great idea to give the learner driver some motorway driving experience before they are allowed to pass their test.

    Thanks for that Angie.

It was on the national news last night.

    A great idea.

The thing is that I passed my test more than two years ago and yet I would be scared to drive on a motorway.

Mind you, owning a car would help. Rolling Eyes

That's true Angie. I love you

Anyway, anything would be better than letting newly-passed young drivers onto the motorways without and special training for doing that safely.

Angie, the first thing I did after passing my test was to go with a companion onto a motorway. I took my companion to Heathrow for a coffee. Reading to Heathrow and back in the 70s was a pretty easy trip, but it stopped me worrying about motorway driving as I was confident having passed my test.

Like anything else, experience is what counts.

I think that is why the government are now making new drivers get motorway experience with a driving instructor in a dual-controlled car.

I agree, motorway driving is less scary than new drivers think. My father would not drive on motorways for many years, until I led him down to Wales one year. He was pleasantly surprised and didn't look back!

I miss driving, but my eyes are never going to be up to standard again.

    That's sad HG. Sad

I do not know what I would do without my wee Nissan Leaf EV.
