HS2 reveals winners of building contracts

The winners of 6.6bn worth of contracts to build the first phase of HS2 between London and Birmingham have been announced by the government.

UK firms Carillion, Costain and Balfour Beatty are among the consortiums who will build tunnels, bridges and embankments on the first stretch of the new high speed rail line.

The contracts will support 16,000 jobs.

The final routes of the Manchester and Leeds branches of HS2 are due to be announced later.

I have been wondering about the full cost of this new high-speed rail line, ( around 60billion ), as after all it will only shorten the journey-time from London to Edinburgh by around forty minutes, and many hundreds of homes and businesses will be swallowed up in the process.

    Opinions please.

One of the branches of this line is going to cut through a brand new housing estate, resulting in the demolition of several homes and a drop in the value of those remaining.

I think you will find that there will be many more homes destroyed by the path of the HST train

Of course many people might be happy if they are getting better than market value and some compensation for losing their homes.

It may take a few compulsive purchase orders to get the job done.

As usual, many people will try to resist this rail-track going through their houses and businesses, but with compulsory purchase and large compensation packages it will be done.

What I find interesting is that the underground Crossrail contract is going to cost 15 billion in London, but the HST is only planning to go to Birmingham and Manchester initially, and it could cost up to 60 billion.

If there is to be a truly HST going to Birmingham and areas I would hope that eventually it could go up as far as Edinburgh and even on to Aberdeen, as if it did we would then have a high-speed rail service that might compare with the ones in Japan and in France.

On MSN news this morning there was a report of a possible Hyperloop scheme going London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh.

I'm unsure of this Hyperloop business; the idea is good, but so far, the experimental results don't look promising.

Yes vacuum transport, in a pipe, had already been tried in Victorian times but it failed miserably because of the costs and lack of technology involved.

Being a science nut, I have already examined Elon Musk's Hyperloop system.

An experimental Hyperloop train is already being built in America, and if it turns out to be cost-effective, ( which I doubt ), it may very well finish up in Britain too.

Anybody interested in this project can find about it HERE
