Is you're smart meter spying on you ?

Post by papa_umau on Mon 03 Jul 2017, 11:47 am

The French are getting heated up about their meters collecting data on their daily lives. Perhaps the British should be concerned too.

By Patrick Collinson of the Guardian.

They are the mini-computers being installed in 30m UK homes and businesses in an £11bn programme that will allow the energy companies to remotely monitor our gas and electricity usage.

But could smart meters also become the new spies in our homes, raising fresh fears about a surveillance society as they track our daily activities ?

Campaigners in France, where a similar installation programme is taking place, think so.

On holiday in Bordeaux recently I was struck by posters advertising a demo called “Stop Linky”. Linky is the name of French utility giant EDF’s new smart meter, but it has sparked a more vociferous backlash than here.

Dites NON! aux compteurs communicants LINKY,” posters shouted ahead of a demo in mid-June, with others planned around the country.

Maybe the smart-meters being installed in Britain are not the same as the French smart-meters are, but it will do no harm to find out.

Like the new smart-bots anything electronic that is allowed into your house will almost certainly have a data-gathering function as well.

The companies that sell or give us these machines to us cannot resist the temptation from using them as spies.

In that, I think you are right Zathrus.

These Marketeers, ( as I like to call them ), use every trick in the book to get into our minds and desires so they can specifically target us with this information.

A perfect example of this is how, if you pay attention, you will see the "bots" working on this and many other innocent website in order to find key-words that will allow them to target us on the adverts that are in the top-line banner-ads.

For you're information, if you go to the main home-page of this website HERE and scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see information on who or what is surfing the same pages as you.

If there is a "bot" at work, this is where you will find the information, although they are not always scanning the pages of ROB.

( It is because Forumotion, ( the forum host ), allow these "bots" to be present that we get this service free ).

Sorry, but I don't talk French Papa.

Having said that, I do see what you are getting at.

I believe that just about everything that is connected to the internet, including smart meters and social networking robots, not to mention our computers too, could possibly be used to spy on us and to measure our shopping habits.

It is just an unavoidable risk attached to this very high-tech world.

It can be avoided, but to do so would mean abrogating ourselves from anything high-tech.

We take so many of today's advances for granted that is would be very difficult to avoid it all.

Angie; It says 'Say No to LINKY communicating meters' which is what they call Smart Meters.

I don't like Smart Tech myself, don't like the thought of my appliances gossiping behind my back! Wink

No "Neanderthal" HG, just a very choosy person that does not throw in with the rest.

The only way to properly protect our privacy is to not have ANY of those potential spies in our homes.

I don't think that I would have that kind of single-mindedness.

I do have a laptop at the moment, but I keep the camera covered and also cover the sound ports when not in use.

My son uses a 'dumb' TV as his monitor, so there is no camera to activate. I don't use online services any more than essential and I flat out refuse to use online banking. Nor do I use Ebay or Paypal, so I can laugh when I get requests to respond to Amazon, Paypal and others when they attempt to 'Phish' me. I think that many folk leave themselves open to scammers.

I have been conned in the past, so it makes me extra cautious.

Yeah HG, the saying here is "once bitten, twice shy", and those that do not have such first-hand evidence of scamming are sitting waiting for the scammers to pounce.
