More nurses and midwives leaving than joining.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 03 Jul 2017, 11:25 am

More NHS nurses and midwives leaving than joining, new figures show.

Between 2016 and 2017, 20 per cent more people left the nursing register than joined it.

The number of nurses and midwives leaving the profession has risen 51 per cent in just four years, with those under the age of retirement citing low pay and poor working conditions.

New figures from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) show that for the first time in recent history more midwives and nurses are leaving the register than are joining, with home-grown UK nurses leaving in the largest numbers.

It is at times like these that we have to be thankful that many thousands of nurses and midwives are now coming to work in the NHS from abroad, as these vacancies just cannot be filled by using British-trained staff.

If Brexit stops these valuable workers from coming from any of the EU countries then Britain and our great NHS is going to be in a bad way very quickly.

This is not just a job for most nurses and midwives; it is a vocation.

Having said that they also need to have decent pay in order to be able to live in this expensive world.

The quicker the cap is lifted on public services pay-rises the better for everybody.

My experiences of hospitals lately are that this is being blown out of proportion by the left wing press. There are still way to many stood around chatting and shuffling useless pieces of paper for there to be a shortage.

You have a very jaundiced view of the NHS Gandhi.

Yes, there are plenty of "paper shufflers" in the NHS, but we need to get rid of THEM and not the nurses and junior doctors.

I have a lot of experience of NHS hospitals, as I have been in them no less than six times in my life, and what is clear to me is that the nurses and junior doctors are snowed under with work, including bureaucracy; so much that they have not enough time left for being doctors and nurses.

Typical of the NHS pen-pushers is how they have removed three beds from a children's ward because they do not have the staff to service them.

Nurses and doctors do not shuffle paper for fun, but nowadays it accompanies the job.
With our more litigious climate the paperwork is part of the senior echelons and bean counters attempts to avoid being sued for not having enough staff on duty to fulfil the brief of patient care.
As a former nurse myself, I resent your allegations, Ghandi.

Yes, the best way to be able to talk about something is to have lived it.

I do agree that a lot of the time taken up by paperwork done by the clinical staff is there just to ensure that if anything goes wrong there is always someone to blame at the clinical end.
