The largest British aircraft carrier is now to start sea trials.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 26 Jun 2017, 12:38 pm

The first of two new Royal Navy aircraft carrier is due to set sail on it's maiden voyage from the Rosyth dockyard in Fife

HMS Queen Elizabeth - one of two new carriers being built in the yard at a cost of more than 6bn - is to begin sea trials.

She is the largest warship ever built for the Royal Navy.

Her flightdeck alone is the size of three football pitches.

Once in service she can operate with a crew of 1,000 and 40 aircraft.

Find out more about this Scottish-built ship HERE

Find out more about the F35B Lightning aircraft HERE

The thing that amazes and annoys me is that there are no aircraft available for these two aircraft carriers yet, and when they do become available they are going to be American-built F35B STOVL warplanes.

I mean do we not have the capability to design and build our own aircraft nowadays for these new carriers ?

Even if the F-35Bs STOVL version, that we are going to buy in large numbers costs around - $122.8 million each to buy and even more to keep serviceable, it might be cheaper to buy as a proven war-fighter than what it would cost us to develop one of our own that had the same performance capabilities.

Here's a site I found that tells us all that we might want to know about this American warplane. https://www.f35.com/about/fast-facts/cost

The fact that the STOVL version uses British Rolls Royce engines means that it has a lot going for it.

Here are some pictures of the actual model that we will buy for our two new carriers: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lockheedmartin/sets/72157625859980836/

It might be interesting to note that the F35 warplane, in all of it's versions is going to be sold to at least eleven countries.

I hope they don't get into the hands of any of our enemies.

    Great posting Zathrus.

I think I would be inclined to agree that developing our own special aircraft-carrier fighter/bombers would jut be too prohibitive in cost compared with the buying of the F35Bs from America,

This takes me back to the early days of the Harrier jump-jet where eventually a version for use on-board aircraft carriers was developed. They called it The Sea Harrier.

It's major problems were that it was subsonic and it had a comparatively short-range when vertical take-off and landings were practiced.

While it was serving in the Falklands war it shot down twenty enemy aircraft for only the loss of one from ground fire.

It was eventually sold to the Indian Navy, and a few were sold to the American Marines where they did things with it that we had never tried.

    Thanks for the gen Zathrus.

It is interesting to note what planes will be onboard the two new carriers.

I find that American VTOL version of the F35 very interesting. The fact that it has Rolls Royce engines makes it even better.

The first of these pair is a really cool looking thing with the two islands:

Yes, it certainly is a very large beast.

The thing is that it will make a large target for sea-skimming anti-ship missiles like the French Exocet.

Mind you I am sure that the experts will know this, and they will have counter-measures built in to defend from any attack like that.

I think the greatest threat to such a large ship will be the more-modern fire-and-forget torpedoes that many potential enemy forces will have.

I think we would have been better off upgrading our Sea Harriers, instead of selling them to America.

Sadly the Sea Harriers were past upgrading and they were not efficient enough or had the range to fight a modern war.

That is not to say that we could not design and build an aircraft similar to the F35B if we wanted to.

I loved the brilliant Harriers too, BTW.

If they were past upgrading, how come many are still in use in the States? I can't help feeling that that was the British handy excuse for not investing in ongoing research and development; but then I have a jaundiced view of the British attitude towards our excellent engineers and the lack of investment in home grown innovation.

Historically, we Brits have been slow to appreciate our own inventors, which is why other countries take our ideas and run with them. For instance, we invented Graphene, but everyone else is developing it's properties.

I could shake some of our politicians sometimes! (actually that was an understatement, try All of the time!)

Coming from a nation of inventors I can only agree with you HG.

We - Britain - have never had the imagination to serve our great inventors and it is very true that many of our past inventions had to go abroad to get them supported and built.

We HAVE the capability to build the most modern and the best air-craft carriers so why have we not been given the job of designing and building new VTOL aircraft for them too.

I think our connection to America as a bit too incestuous for me.

I agree about America; I lived there for a year with my late husband in 1990; the people were lovely and welcoming, but the authorities and red tape were awful even then!

Nowadays, I squirm at the thought that we may end up as the next State!

I think you are right about that as I often think that we are already the fifty-first state of America.
