The first knockback in the Brexit negotiations.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 20 Jun 2017, 11:38 am

Brexit: UK caves in to EUs demand to settle divorce terms before future trade deals on first day of talks

David Davis told the 'weakness of your negotiating position' has been exposed - within hours of the talks opening.

Britain caved in to the EU on the opening day of the Brexit talks, when it agreed to settle its divorce before trying to negotiate a future trade deal.

In a major defeat, Brexit Secretary David Davis was forced to drop his central demand for the two strands of the negotiations to be staged in parallel, within hours of arriving in Brussels.

Last month, Mr Davis vowed to wage the row of the summer to secure immediate talks on a free trade agreement predicting an early collapse if the EU refused to give way.

Well, there you have it: It looks as if Davis is going to take the easiest way out of the Brexit negotiations.

That will be by just agreeing with everything the EU Brexit negotiator throws at us.

In other words that adds up to being a HARD Brexit deal.

Of course, that was what we expected from the Tories, was it not ?

I think that Davis is going to be hammered from all angles as a way of punishing Britain for having the temerity to leave the EU.

Every point that he tries to get a result from for Britain is going to be one that he will have to fight for with gritted teeth.

We may find that he will have to keep coming back to the Westminster parliament to get decisions made.

I cannot see him having the personal power to make such important deals on his own.

Every little step that is going to be made in the Brexit negotiations is going to be a battle that very few of our Tory politicians would be prepared to make.

This could go on for years and years and until we are totally sick of the word "Brexit", if we are not already sick of it.

Yes, I am sure that many of us are already "sick" of the word "Brexit", but as things are going it could take years for us to get totally out.

I don't think that the open-market or the Customs Union agreement is going to survive, and without these items as part of these deals, leaving the EU is going to damage our trade and our employment figures very badly.

I guess we shall see over these years of wrangling. Twisted Evil

Don't worry - it will all end in tears and we will stay in with some kind of u-turn fudge.

Nice to have your crystal-ball Gandhi.

Mind you, I do agree with you that it could all "end in tears".

    But who's tears I wonder ?

The important thing is not to listen to the media who have a strong anti Europe bias. All this talk about 'punishment' is straight from the Daily Mail hatebook.

The smart question is, what sort of arrangement is there that isn't better than the existing EU membership? Because it should not be better 'out' than 'in' otherwise the EU has no purpose.

We in Britain will lose a lot with a hard Brexit.

Once out, at the whims of the European rulers in the EC, we will be losing a lot of the things we previously took for granted that were good for Britain.

The only reasons why the referendum voted us out is two-fold: 1 ). Many of the outers thought we were paying too much to stay in, and 2). The same people thought that Brexit would be the only way to stop immigration via the Schengen agreement, ( free movement over European borders of people already in Europe ).

Even if this is true almost all of the other things we have by being members of the EU are to our advantage.

If you think that May and Davis are going to be able to keep all of the good things in any deal without the "bad" things remaining then both of them and the rest of the outers are kidding themselves on.
