Buying a home is biggest worry for young people in Britain.

Buying a house is the biggest consumer concern for Britain's young people

Buying a home has been ranked the number one consumer concern for half of 18 to 34 year olds, according to new research.

A survey by consumer group Which? revealed 49 per cent of younger people said home buying was their biggest worry, followed by social care for older people (46 per cent) and energy prices (34 per cent).

Three in 10 (28 per cent) said home buying and selling was a top three priority for the next government to tackle.

However, that number jumped to four in 10 (42 per cent) for Londoners, where the average house price is 475,000 compared with an average price of 218,000 for the whole of the UK.

It's bad enough that house prices and even the deposit to allow young people to get on the housing ladder is so high, but It is awful that buying a half-decent house in London is simply out of the possibilities to just about anybody.

It has always been like that and the only respite was when Thatcher triggered the right to own and made it cheaper by putting the council houses in reach of the less well off

Up until the "right to buy" was offered by Thatcher many working class people had little or no desire to actually take on a mortgage in order to buy a home; as the number of council houses available at the time made it easier to rent.

Now we are all trying to kid ourselves on that we can be home-buyers while many of us cannot really safely commit to a thirty year mortgage.

The advantage to me would be to get out of this expensive private rented accommodation and to buy an affordable home

I would be willing to pay a mortgage, but it is getting the deposit that I am finding very difficult.

There are all kinds of "help to buy" schemes out there if you look for them.

HERE is the government's own site on this subject, but Googling the term will bring up more ways to get help to buy your first home Angie.
