China has licensed NINE new electric car making plants.

China has licensed 9 new electric-car plants, more than U.S. has today

Quick trivia question: how many plants are there in the United States currently building electric cars?

To be generous, we'll allow both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

The answer turns out to be four.

Meanwhile, China—which has a long-term goal of dominating the world's electric-car sector—has now licensed nine separate electric-car plants.

That factoid comes via NEVS, the Chinese company using some of the remnants of the old Saab brand to build electric cars.

It has just inked a deal to develop and build electric cars jointly with Iconiq, one of dozens of existing Chinese automakers.

I don't know about you guys but this seems to me to be a strong sign that China plans to dominate the world electric car market in the future.

One to watch for I think !

I don't really care where the electric cars/vans come from in the future so long as I can afford one.

Most of you will remember how Dacia shocked the car markets when they introduced their new and very cheap range a couple of years ago.

If Romania can do it, so can China.

    Thanks for that Papa.

It certainly does seem that China is working hard for our pennies.

Mind you, I don't think electric cars will catch on until they are as cheap as petrol and diesel cars are and they are not hard to get charged anywhere we might want to.

The "range anxiety" that comes with electric cars means that even a cheap-to-buy electric car cannot go the length of the country without at least three charges.

Yes Angie, you are right about that.

The thing is that if the Chinese car manufacturers are going to produce so many electric and hybrid cars from it's nine new electric car plants we may see some of them appearing here.

That said, I am sure that the Chinese are worried about what will happen with Britain and brexit as they might find that import restrictions on Chinese exported cars could become punitive. ( It is called protectionism, and nobody knows just how severe it might be in Europe or in Britain after brexit is complete ).
