Rip-off call charges to hospital patients.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 02 May 2017, 11:09 am

Critics slam 'rip off' 50p-a-minute charge to call patients' hospital phones

Hospedia, who run bedside TV and phone services in NHS hospitals, connect calls via 070 numbers.

Relatives who call patients in hospital are still being forced to pay “rip off” charges of 50p a minute despite a promised clampdown on the issue.

Callers are also forced to listen to a lengthy recorded message of about 70 seconds – which racks up charges before they are even connected to their loved one.

The message contains information already obvious to the caller, such as the fact the patient is in hospital, and tells callers to be “patient”.

Critics say patients are being treated as “cash cows” and described the charges as “extortionate”.

If any of you thought that the NHS was safe under Tory control, as promised, this latest privatisation of another of the previously public services proves that privatisation IS being undertaken by stealth in our wonderful NHS.

It's like the TVs, as now they are all privatised and make money for the suppliers.

    This should not happen.

The predecessor of this, Patientline, was just as bad. Not only were the calls expensive, but the TV was Subscription based and equally expensive.

It is a bad day when people who are sick and in hospital are used as a cash cow for private companies.

It would not be so bad if the charges made here only covered the usage costs, but they don't as they are a way to make lots of money in profits out of the sick.

Profiteering is bad enough anywhere it can be found, but in the NHS it is just plain wrong.

This is all part and parcel of the Tory government privatising the NHS by a thousand cuts.

In NHS hospitals private companies now make the food, do the cleaning, do the laundry, and supply the nursing shortages via the agencies, not to mention charging for telephone and TV services.

Even operations are hived off to the private hospital sector when they cannot be done in the NHS.

    Well, and truly said Angie.

Instead of using the private services to do these things, especially the outrageously expensive agencies, and getting operations done in the private hospitals, all that needs to be done is that the NHS must recruit more direct labour instead of paying three or four times more for agency staff.

It's common sense after all. I have no clue why the NHS financiers cannot see this.
