UK households spent 180m on 'unnecessary' power capacity report

Cost of putting power stations on standby over winter could soar to 387m, Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit report says.

Households have spent 180m over the past three years on spare power capacity that was never used, according to a report that comes as MPs prepare to debate what can be done about rising energy bills.

Power stations have been put on standby over the winter since 2014 as part of the National Grids supplemental balancing reserve but the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) has found that the scheme, which closed in February, was never used.

We are always being told that we need to burn more fossil fuels in order to generate more and more electricity, but this report shows that our EXCESS capacity costs us a fortune to maintain.

This all stems from the fact that the electricity that we use cannot be stored and as such it needs to have the extra generating capacity for when we need it.

Someone, somewhere, is getting these sums wrong, and as usual we are the ones that have to pay for their mistakes.

You make that sound as if we have a choice about the spending of this money.

As it is included in out energy bills we never notice it.

True Zathrus, but I see no reason for paying for something that we do not get.

It is up to the National Grid and the government to protect us from these charges.
