Peers want a veto over Brexit deal.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 07 Mar 2017, 12:30 pm

Brexit: Peers to press for parliamentary veto over deal.

Ministers are at risk of a second defeat in the House of Lords over the bill paving the way for Brexit talks.

Peers may back calls for a "meaningful vote" on the final terms of the UK's withdrawal from the EU and its future relations during a debate on Tuesday.

No 10 has assured Parliament it will get a say on the outcome, but opponents want the option of a veto, even if no Brexit deal is agreed.

Although I have little time for The Lords, I do admit that the upper house - in whatever form - has the ability to keep The Commons on the straight and narrow on occasion.

Maybe this is one of these occasions.

Yes, it was "one of these occasions" Paps.

I was pleased when May and her cohort were beaten again over Brexit, in The Lords, and I am sure there will be more votes like this before Brexit is finished.

One cannot blame the Peers for wanting a veto as if Theresa May thinks she can get away with it she will force through what she wants without any discussion or vote on the final outcome.

It is certainly looking as if The Peers are going to chuck a spanner into the Brexit works any time they get the opportunity.

Because there is no hard left or right numbers and there are a large number of cross-party voters in The Lords, it is difficult to say which way any particular votes will go.

Yes HG, she has been threatening to do exactly that for some time now, but if she tries to do it without parliamentary approval she is going to lose again and again.

Even if she does trigger article fifty that does not mean that the process afterwards will be an easy one.

The political pundits believe that the actual pulling out of Europe could take anything up to two years.
