Visitors urinating on Avebury stones after council shut the toilets.

NationaláTrust blamed for visitors urinating on Avebury stones after deciding to close loos at 4pm.

TheáNationaláTrust is being blamed for visitors urinating on Europe's largest stone circle after deciding to shutáits loos early.

Locals in the village of Avebury in Wiltshire say the 5,000-year-old monuments are being damaged by tourists who are getting caught short.

The residents say it's down to theáNationaláTrustáonly opening the doors to the toilets in its museum from 10am to 4pm each day.

This seems to be an action that many councils are doing to try to save money on public toilets right up and down the country.

I wonder how this will effect the thousands of tourists that come here to see our historic places only to find there is nowhere to take what the Americans call "a comfort break".

Trying to save money this way seems to me to be a false economy, at least, and something that spoils our whole reputation as a country to visit to get a bit of historical education, at worst.

    Any comments ?

Yes we hear of council public toilets shutting down all over the place. I think that this is one of the best ways to save taxpayers money - according to the council - but it is a really bad thing to do if we are trying to encourage tourists to come to Britain.

    Petty, I call it.

Yes, all humans have to have a place to "go" and other places with their own toilets do not like people coming in off the streets to use their facilities.

There are two sets of public toilets in Avebury; one set in the High Street, and another behind the Museum. There are also toilets in the Restaurant next to the Museum, also in the Red Lion. There's no excuse.

The thing is HG, that new visitors probably won't know where these toilets are and if they shut the closest one then many will not have the time to search for another. ( Know what I mean ? )

Good point; If you've never been to Avebury you are less likely to know where to find them, because as part of the Stonehenge World Heritage site the signs have to be unobtrusive. It would be better if they could put Toilets on the Car Park at the edge of the village where the visual amenity of the Stones would not be interrupted.

I know Avebury well; although I haven't been there since the wheelchair took over!

    Sorry to hear that HG.

Although I do think that wheelchair access has improved markedly over recent years.

People with Blue Badges can still use the Central car park, everyone else has to use the visitors' one, so it would make sense to have loos in the car park, even if they were just Portaloos.

I can imagine the Red Lion getting pretty miffed with non-customers using their loos when the NT ones are closed, especially when the Druids descend! Twisted Evil
