Will you get the job if named Adam or Mohamed ?

Is it easier to get a job if you're Adam or Mohamed ?

A job seeker with an English-sounding name was offered three times the number of interviews than an applicant with a Muslim name, a BBC test found.

Inside Out London sent CVs from two candidates, "Adam" and "Mohamed", who had identical skills and experience, in response to 100 job opportunities.

Adam was offered 12 interviews, while Mohamed was offered four.

Although the results were based on a small sample size, they tally with the findings of previous academic studies.

As I see it, it does seem as if an Asian-sounding name immediately puts employment managers on the defensive.

If this is true then it follows that the employment market is still intrinsically racist.

What, if any, is your knowledge of this ?

Never noticed this before, I have to say, but I am not one bit surprised that this kind of racism still exists.

If proof of a birth-name is not required to get any good job, then by law, and by deed-poll, anybody can call themselves any name they wish.

Of course if you turn up for interview with either black or of Arab skin-tones, for example, questions are going to be asked about your country and race of origin.

Of course that does not make it right that such questions could be asked.
