Upfront charges for NHS foreign patients in England

NHS hospitals in England will have a legal duty to charge overseas patients upfront for non-urgent care if they are not eligible for free treatment.

From April this year, foreign patients could be refused operations unless they cover their costs in advance.

NHS Improvement, which oversees the trusts, said hospitals would no longer have to chase money they are owed.

Emergency treatment will continue to be provided and invoiced later.

    Typical Tories ! Mad

And an other thing: What is going to happen to the reciprocal health-care that we get by registering for the E111 scheme after we are out of the EU. ?

At the moment, these charges only apply to non EU patients, as we have reciprocal agreements with the EU. How long this will last, however is anyone's guess.

    Quite correct HG.

Also, the reciprocal health-care agreement that we have with the EU countries, ( which is now called the European Health Insurance Card or EHIC, and not the E111 any more ), is liable to be lost right along with the BREXIT agreement.

Whether the Prime Minister can get this back as part of her withdrawal deal, or not, is still to be seen.

I just hope that if the British government do start to buy medicines from foreign sources that we shall see this trickling down to the patients.

There is nothing wrong with this at all - Zath you let your bigotry obscure your common sense. We are the laughing stock of the third world with patients coming over for treatment on the NHS for free. My taxes used to pay for someone elses drugs....If you fall ill in the US they take your wallet first before treatment. No reciprocal arrangements in the 'special relationship'

As usual Gandhi - two wrongs do not make a right.

Also, this government - surprisingly - is the one that is going to start to charge medical tourists from around the world and outside of the EU for coming here just to be looked after by our NHS.

It also used to be so expensive - and still is - to have a baby in the USA that many thousands of Americans used to come here to have their babies delivered. This too has already stopped.

What will happen to the reciprocal EHIC card after Brexit is another subject altogether.
