Brexit white paper to be published today.

Post by papa_umau on Thu 26 Jan 2017, 11:56 am

Brexit: Article 50 legislation to be published today.

A bill enabling the government to trigger Article 50 - the formal process for leaving the EU - is to be produced today after the Supreme Court ruled legislation would be necessary.

Brexit Secretary David Davis has said the bill will be "straightforward".

But it is expected to face amendments from MPs and peers, while others have said they will oppose it outright.

Get the full story from The BBC HERE

Well folks, there you have it.

The first governmental document on Brexit is to be published today.

Don't expect this publication to make the triggering of article 50 any easier than it already is, as this white paper is going to be ripped apart, heavily discussed and attacked by the remainers in the House of Commons and in The Lords until it eventually goes forward to be voted upon in both houses.

This will only be the start of the biggest row that has ever been seen in British parliamentary history, and it could go on for many years before we finally get out of Europe.

One thing is sure, and that is, that it is going to be interesting.

The document that was published yesterday was not the "White paper" talked about by Theresa May, it was a single page document entitled the "European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill", and it started the ball rolling on this process.

Already a shadow minister called Tulip Siddiq has resigned from her government position saying she "cannot reconcile herself to the front-bench position".

Corbyn has imposed a three-line whip on his MPs, telling them to back the newly-published bill, and a lot of them do not like being forced to go against their settled wills.

This is only the start of this process, and I think it is going to cause a lot of bad feeling as it goes ahead.

Sorry Zathrus, of course you are right that the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) "bill" proposed by Theresa May is not the white paper that will discuss all of the details.

That will be much bigger than one page.

And, here is the start of the battles: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/labour-mps-brexit-bill-motion-throw-out-article-50-commons-debate-heidi-alexander-a7551091.html

The Tory government do have a majority in the commons, but if many on their side rebel against government votes the numbers outside the Tories that want to be awkward along side the Tory rebels we may see Theresa May losing vote after vote.

I don't normally follow politics very closely, but this subject is going to very entertaining.

It certainly is going to get interesting Angie.

Every new Bill has a set procedure to go through before it can get onto the statute books and HERE is the passage that this Bill will take.

At the moment it has only reached the second reading and it has a long way to go yet.

Something tells me that this particular one sheet of paper Bill is going to find more stumbling blocks in it than any Bill that has gone before.

I will keep watching it's progress and I will keep you all informed.
