Massive "BOT" network found on Twitter.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 24 Jan 2017, 12:35 pm

Massive collections of fake accounts are lying dormant on Twitter, suggests research.

The largest network ties together more than 350,000 accounts and further work suggests others may be even bigger.

UK researchers accidentally uncovered the lurking networks while probing Twitter to see how people use it.

Some of the accounts have been used to fake follower numbers, send spam and boost interest in trending topics.

I find this report extremely scary as if Twitter has gone to such resorts to use fake follower numbers, send spam and boost interest in trending topics, then it has to be severely censured by the internet watchdogs.

Innocent internet-users need to be protected from technological moves such as this.

    What say you ?

    That sounds awful.

Why should they be allowed to do this I ask ?

Is this not the job of the watchdogs ?

Yes Zathrus, I just said that.

The social networking sites seem to have many robotic algorithms that manipulate the information that the people who are attracted to the social networking sites deliver.

For them to be used nefariously, if not criminally, has to be a breach of trust in their clients.

I've never used Twitter, nor do I have an account with them. Facebook throws up enough problems for this technologically challenged old bird! Laughing

The thing is that many billions of people across the world DO have such accounts in social media services and they should be protected from unscrupulous companies hammering these supposed to be "private", when required, accounts with hi-tech "BOTS" and their dangerous software algorithms.
